In a place soon to be known as 'The Valley of Death', in a small clearing called landing zone X-Ray, Lt. Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) and 400 young troops, all from an elite American combat division, were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in U.S. history...

Great war Film, superb 1080p with an excellent soundtrack!

I bought the Region A edition before Paramount pulled the plug on its support of Blu-ray after a bribe of 150 million from Toshiba, head of the HD-DVD consortium and developers of the HDDVD!
Fans will really love the total carnage this film portrays with at the time, newly developed acimetric 3D warfare in 1965 with first use of helicopter airborne troops. It will cerrtainly make anyone think twice about the devastion that war has on both fronts, the battlefield and the family back home.
The big errors in this film is the M16's, they have the Forward Assist(protrudes from the right side of the rifle Butt), this allows stoppages or jams to be cleared and was not introduced until after 1967, two years after.
Irony is Stanely Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket', filmed in UK does have the original authentic 1960's M16's, clearly seen without protruding Forward Assist!
In 'We Were Soldiers', there's a both touching and annoying old scotish song played throughout called, 'Sargent Mckenzie' lullibying in the background, it was written in the 1600's by a decendent about the relative who lost a limb in war, Mel loved the haunting
tune and has it playing like a stuck record!

Excellent movie, not the best blu ray picture you will see

First of all. the movie is great, so I will refer to the blu ray quality.

The film itself is well presented, but in the majority of shots, especially the battle scenes, the picture has grain embedded to it.

However, this is intentional and was put in place to add to the feel and realisim to the movie. ( the same was done with saving prvt ryan and band of brothers)

This did not bother me at all, the picture was still clearly better than the dvd release and the audio was brilliant.

Overall, i have double dipped and bought this on blu ray, it is a classic movie, made better in hi def, it never looked or sounded so good!.

I hope this review helps

I first bought this film on standard dvd and thought what a great film im not a big fan of war films but i have to say this is a superb...

So when i saw it on blu-ray i had to buy it, the picture quality is grainy in places but it does get better. the colours are rich & deep and it's amazing in hd 1080p. the sound quality on my home cinema system is fantastic when turned up...

Mel gibson gave one of his best performances in this film the story line is good so for me its worth having in the blu-ray collection...

TURN UP THE CINEMA SYSTEM THE SOUND IS BRILLIANT... ENJOY...

 WOW !
