Innocence Has A Power Evil Cannot Imagine.

Pan's Labyrinth is the story of a young girl that travels with her mother and adoptive father to a rural area up North in Spain, 1944 - after Franco's victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.

...this is the Eurpean release without DNR and 5.1 DD soundtrack. I would've given this a top score if had the 7.1 soundtrack the US release has.

Best film I have seen in a long time - EXCELLENT

I didn't think I was going to like this one - the title and the picture on the front cover suggested that it was a fantasy aimed at children. I was also concerned that the film was Spanish - I am not a big fan of subtitles.

However, after the first 5 minutes the subtitles were never a problem. The film was so absorbing I actually forgot about them. I'm very glad that such a great film was not ruined by dubbing with American accents. Hearing the Spanish language gave the film extra authenticity.

It is evident that the director is targeting a more mature audience, as the film does not get bogged down in the fantasy side of things. The vast majority of the film concentrates on the harsh reality of war in Franco's Spain that young Ofelia finds herself in. Several fantasy scenes are interspersed with the violence and horror of the real world, and these are all done well, particularly the scene with the pale man.

The young actress who plays Ofelia is perfect for the role. You really sympathize with her character because her step-father is one of the cruellest, evil villains I have ever seen in a film (Sergi Lopez is brilliant).

People criticising this film usually complain that:
a) It it subtitled.
b) Not enough fantasy.
c) Too violent.

In response, I would say that this is the first subtitled film I have watched from start to finish - it really is that good. The fantasy scenes are limited, but this is because the film is aimed at an adult audience. There is violence in the film, but it is not gory or over-done like in a lot of films you see nowadays. The worst thing you actually see are people shooting each other at distance. You don't see the farmers being killed, and you don't see the prisoner being tortured.

The only negative thing I have to say about this film is that the opening scene gives too much away. You know what is going to happen at the end, which is a shame.

On Blu-Ray, the PQ is very good. There is also a long list of extras, but most of these are in SD. Director's commentary is very informative.

So, at long last, there is a film that me and my parents can all agree on as being excellent - Pan's Labyrinth.

This is not a horror film it sits firmly within the fantasy genre. Guillermo Del Toro is an exceptional director, producer, screen writer. Pans Labyrinth is a more like a dark fairytale with no guarantees of the happily ever after. Del Toros earlier work such as Cronos and the Devils Backbone are very much worth seeking out

 Brother's Grimm on Speed!

Forget the subtitles, kick back and allow this stunning visual metaphor for the ethnic cleansing of a democracy which is not prepared to embrace a military junta. Strong messages carefully cultured in those fairytales that had you laughing, crying and peeping out from under the duvet to see if the scary monsters were real. This film may have strong political messages for us all but you get lost in visuals of mythic proportions which are as beautiful as they are surreal and unnerving. This film deserves a Blu Ray release, you'll be entranced and occasionally disturbed by this Brother's Grimm on speed.

First off this is an awsome movie.. Just everything about it compells you to keep watching. Even though it is probably the most horrific movie i have ever seen!! Someone already commented that it keeps you crying most of the way through .. this is true think i started to cry about 20 mins in and kept crying till it was over, on and off. It is also guarenteed to put you off your sleep. i didnt sleep well for about 3 nights after watching. I do believe that from a movie critic point of view it deserves the 5 stars that most people give it .... but Its just to gory .... I cannot believe that this is a 15's rated movie.. Please DO NOT WATCH IF.. you ever had a child.. or are planning on one day giving birth. it was months ago when i watched it and im still getting sick to my stomach thinking about it.

So i guess : Awsome film if you want to go to bed sick and afraid of the shadows:)
