  Pretty dazzling

Danny Boyle delivers a dazzling sci-fi payload here with this thoughtful and beautifully crafted film about a mission to re-ignite our dying sun with a huge nuclear detonation. Along the way, echoes of "2001", "Alien" and "Event Horizon" collectively unnerve audience and crew, leading up to several nail-biting moments and a symbolic ending. This is big and bold film-making that hasn't been seen coming from British shores in many a year, and is worth celebrating if only for that. It's also pretty darn good.

As a previous reviewer mention, I was initially a little disappointed with Sunshine. It changes pace quite considerably towards the end which felt a little jarring. However watching it again with my expectations sufficiently re-adjusted, this has developed into one of my favourite films ever. I can't remember how many times I've watched it and I still love it. The effects and camera work are breath taking, the music majestic, the film haunting and bleak, the end beautiful. It's as much a study of human psychology as it is a sci-fi film.

And to cap it all off there's even an audio commentary with Professor Brian Cox. Nerdtastic ;0)

  Bright indeed!

This is a very well crafted scfi thriller in space! The storyline is very intresting what would happen if our sun went out eh? With Cillian Murphy (28 days later) and Hiroyuki Sanada (the last samurai) as crew members gives a decent cast to film and the space ship with a mind of its own and the mystery fireman just watch and see! Agree not a all out action has its moments more about crew and space itself. The blu-ray transfer is excellent cant complain no grain and the colour is brillant and sound is brillant so for a cheap scifi thrill give a go!

Boyle's pre Slumdog venture into sci-fi is a near masterpiece, stunning direction and photography showcased on one of the finest quality blu rays around. Classy stuff to showcase your system.

  Brilliant Sci Fi Movie.

I was completely hooked from beginning to end.
The Story, the Premise, the Acting and Direction were fantastic..
The Dilemmas presented were intriguing and the film involved the viewer all the way through.
Chris Evans was Brilliant as was Cillian Murphy. The rest of the cast played their parts as required.
The only downside was the slightly muddled ending.
Definitely one of the better Sci Fi films from the last Decade

A great blu ray disk of a thought provoking film

If you are expecting a wam bam sci fi fest with laser guns blazzing all over the place - look elsewhere, this is a rather different animal. In line with a recent trend in Sci-Fi films (e.g. Moon & District 19) this is a more thought provoking Sci Fi film that uses special effects to enhance a story rather than being the sole reason for watching. And Danny Boyle does it superbly well here. Yes it is a little derivative (echoes of Event Horizon, The Core, 2001 etc) but it is well acted, not completely far fetched and relatively tense all the way through and as previous reviewers have said it makes you think and certainly will stand up to several viewings.

And that is before you consider the blu ray transfer. Having seen a variety of discs over the past 12 months this is easily in the top 3 - a superbly sharp transfer up with the best combined with a top notch digital soundtrack will make a half decent home cinema system shine.

The soundtrack is superb - John Murphy and Underworld do a great job. The music isnt available in the shops but is on I-tunes (but only as a full album purchase......dont get me started!)

In summary in my opinion this is Danny Boyle's masterpiece - much better than slumdog. If you are in to thought provoking films -it is well worth searching out one of the many £9.99 deals out there at the mo!

Forget Slumdog, this is the best Danny Boyle film

| | See all CaptainClark's reviews (1)

If you're looking for a fast moving sci-fi action film, forget it. However this is easily one of the most thought-provoking, majestic and beautiful films ever made. In a similar vein to Donnie Darko and Solaris in that it stays with you long after the film has ended, Sunshine stands as not only one of the best sci-fi films but simply a stunning film in its own right. Visually awesome, a great ensemble piece, and a breathtaking soundtrack all add to the atmosphere. All the complaints about the ending are all moot points as far as I'm concerned; no-one knows what would happen in that situation and the film does actually stay within the realm of scientific theory rather than being totally unbelievable. I can't recommend this film enough, and on Blu-ray the experience is unmissable. Turn off the lights, crank up the amp and let it take over.
