This is without doubt one of the darkest, meanest and most absorbing thrillers to have emerged from Tinseltown in the last 20 years.
The casting is inspired and the two leads spark up an unexpected chemistry which reveals itself within the opening couple of scenes.
Morgan Freeman is perfect as Detective Somerset, wise, calculating and methodical next to Brad Pitt's Mills, explosive, hardened and eager. The two leads together embody all the killers facets.
The film opens with an understated couple of scenes which sets the slow burning nature of Se7en from the outset. We then bare witness to a fascinating credit sequence which hooks you into the films more macabre tones and instantly warns you that you may not like what you are about to see.
David Fincher is a director you can trust to find the right tones and setting no matter what the subject matter and never feels that he has to cheat the audience with flashy effects and action set pieces. He absorbs you with realism.
Se7en is one of the best thrillers you will find and is undoubtedly the best serial killer movie out there. It may not boast a Hannibal Lecter performance but it certainly captivates you from start to unexpected finish.
Brilliant.
The transfer..........................
New Line Cinema have granted Se7en with a VC-1 encoded, 2.40:1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50GB Blu-ray disc of exceptional quality.
Detail is exceptional whether it be objects or skin textures. Extremely fine filmic grain, which is barely noticeable, provides us with the kind of HD experience we wish for.
Although this is not a movie to boast the widest range of colours for our pallet we are met with a warming golden hue throughout much of the proceedings. The contrast levels are spot on throughout.
It's the darks which are most important to the visual aspect of Se7en and thankfully this is where the transfer comes up trumps. Blacks are always inky and strong with fantastic delineation, crush is never an issue.
I did not detect any compression issues or digital artifacting. Edge enhancement does not rear its ugly head either.
With the grain field intact we can be sure that no DNR has been utilised and as a result Se7en is one of the best, most filmic transfers available.
