All you need is love...

A love story set against the backdrop of the 1960's amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock 'n roll, the film moves from the dockyards of Liverpool to the creative psychedelia of Greenwich Village, from the riot-torn streets of Detroit to the killing fields of Vietnam. The star-crossed lovers, Jude (Jim Sturgess) and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), along with a small group of friends and musicians, are swept up into the emerging anti-war and counterculture movements, with "Dr. Robert" (Bono) and "Mr. Kite" (Eddie Izzard) as their guides. Tumultuous forces outside their control ultimately tear the young lovers apart, forcing Jude and Lucy - against all odds - to find their own way back to each other.

Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war Across The Universe uses Beatles songs to tell its story of young working class Liverpool lad called Jude (Jim Sturgess) who falls in love with American teenager Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood).

The cast perform over 30 Beatles songs each woven into the story and characters. Its a cast of mostly unknowns although there are cameos from Bono and Eddie Izzard.

Jim Sturgess does a great job in the leading role while Evan Rachel Wood proves that she has a very strong singing voice.

Unfortunately the movie was a little too sweet for my taste and I never found myself involved in the characters or their stories.

The Blu-Ray transfer looks great and anyone who likes Beatles music will get a kick out of this but its not as good as I had hoped.

 Amazing

I was so pleasantly surprised by this musical. Downloaded it first because I usually don't like musicals and didn't want to waste money on it. After watching it I immediately fell in love with it.
As a fan of The Beatles I was thrilled to see how well they had incorporated the music into the story.
Every song has a meaning and every musical performance is special. The story revolves around two lovers played by Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess who both do a great job.

To quote Roger Ebert: It's the kind of movie you watch again, like listening to a favourite album"
Wether you like Beatles or not, it's truly a great film.

As a lover of Beatles music I was interested in seeing how they would incorporate the music into the movie. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is like a compilation of music videos, each one telling a story that when put together tell the complete story of the two young lovers, Jude and Lucy. Look out for appearances from Bono and Joe Cocker.
If you like Moulin Rouge (McGregor/Kidman) then you will surely like this.
