New York radio host Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) has a life that she loves and a fiance she adores. All of it is taken from her when a brutal attack leaves Erica badly wounded and her fiance dead. Unable to move past the tragedy, Erica begins prowling the city streets at night to track down the men she holds responsible. Her dark pursuit of justice catches the public's attention, and the city is riveted by her anonymous exploits. But with the NYPD desperate to find the culprit and a dogged police detective (Terrence Howard) hot on her trail, she must decide whether her quest for revenge is truly the right path, or if she is becoming the very thing she is trying to stop.

Jodie Foster plays Erica Bain, who is a Public Radio talk show host. Erica records the sounds and echoes of New York City and later comments upon them on her radio show. Erica is engaged to David Kirmani (Naveen Andrews), a respected doctor. Erica has the perfect life and together they are preparing for their wedding. One evening while taking their dog for a walk in Central Park, they are viciously attacked by three hoodlums, who actually record the malicious beating on a video recorder. The attack is so savage and ruthless that David dies at the scene and Erica is left for dead. Erica awakes in the hospital some weeks later from a deep coma only to discover that David is dead and buried. Totally devastated, her life profoundly transformed, Erica returns home to begin her recovery.

Eventually, and still shell shocked, she is able to rally the courage to leave her apartment, Erica is paralysed in fear to the brutality of the streets. In an act of desperation, she illegally buys a gun. She learns to use the gun proficiently with a great deal of practice. It's not long after this that Erica kills a vicious killer at a liquor store. Feeling a taint justified in this ordeal she realises that to continue she must now evade capture and detection from the police. She chooses this dark path of vigilante justice, on the hope that she will find the three thugs that changed her life so badly. Terrance Howard plays Detective Mercer, who is vehemently frustrated by the legal system he defends, and is called to investigate the series of vigilante style murders. The charismatic and sharp Mercer eventually theorizes the killer may be a "woman with a grudge". Mercer had been a long time admirer of the radio show host and is not long before they meet up and discuss the rehabilitation of her atrocious assault, not knowing of her current vigilante actions. During several dates they also form a touching bond out of both compassion and shared loneliness.

There is a poignant and moving scene as Erica returns to her job as New York radio talk show host. After an uncomfortable lapse of silence, Erica discloses her heart and soul as she talks about her complicated path back to normality, acknowledging she is now one of "the people who live in fear". Jodie Foster's heart felt performance and outstanding acting ability should have gained her an award for this character dramatisation. Her distinct ability is that she always portrays in all her roles the very personality, in a believable performance. Terrance Howard is an appealing screen partner and his composure in all the scenes strengthens the story. "The Brave One" may be criticized for possibly glorifying vigilante justice masked as vengeance, and some will even see a similarity to a feminist version of "Death Wish". The ending to the film is laced with a great twist and leaves one pondering in deep thought way after the credits have finished rolling. Highly recommended viewing.

Blu Ray picture and sound are top notch.

Interesting take on the Vigilante Revenge Movie Genre, by having a woman taking the lead.
Movie tries to be a bit more serious in tone and it's views on the subject, than say Death Wish.
But is ultimately a throw away revenge movie with a Brilliant performance from Jodie Foster and good support from Terrence Howard. Also interesting to see a Big Studio Movie and an A list Actress opposite an Asian/Indian looking person, that I think was a Brave and welcome move.

 A Blu Ray classic?

One of my first ventures into the Blu Ray market and this film did not disappoint. Great film work, excellent cimematography with haunting scenes of modern day New York. I sum this film up as 2008 vigilante with a twist meets Death Wish of old. The story line is seen time and time again but this one has a difference which I cannot put my finger on. Not one of Jodie Foster's best films (she's done some cracking stuff) but solid overall performance which still leads me to think she is one of the best Hollywood actresses over the past twenty years and somewhat underestimated. This film is ideally suited to Blu Ray with a great depth of field and razor sharp imaging. I have also watched this film on ordinary DVD and although the picture quality was, good go for the Blu Ray if you can - I know it is a pity that Blu Ray discs are so unnecessarily expensive but this is worth the extra. Audio is also good with a great surround stage.
