Forget the bloodless Teen Friendly romantic spin on the Vampire myth this is what a Vampire film should be like!
This movie owes as much to classic horror movies as Night of The Living Dead and john Carpenter's The Thing, as it does to it's graphic novel origins.
Every year the small Alaskan town of Barrow is cast into a month of complete darkness due to it's location in the extreme northern hemisphere. As most of the town head south to escape the unrelenting darkness, the town is left with the towns Sherrif ( Josh Hartnett ) his estranged wife (Melissa George) a few locals.
But the town has some new visitors as the darkness falls, these visitors turn out to be Vampires who plan on taking advantage of the unrelenting darkness.
Soon the ever-shrinking group of survivors must do anything they can to stay alive until the sun finaly rises again.
This is a great blood soaked shocker, the film has great moments of suspense and some excellent shocks. The contrast of the red of the blood and the white of the snow really give this film a feel of it's graphic novel origins.
The Vampires are great and very mean and nasty. But the lead Vampire played by the excellent slimmed down Danny Houston in this does look uncannily like Neil Tennant from the camper than camp electro pop group The Pet Shop Boys..
The carnage is off the scale, the cast is good and the suspense is kept to a high throughout the onslaught, with some brillaintly time jolts, the best being the jump through the window scene.
30 Days of Night should rank amongst the best of the modern Vampire films where the list contains the likes of Fright Night (1985) The Lost Boys (1987) , NearDark (1987) and Let Me In (2010)
Director David Slade brings this savage version of the Vampire to the screen with brilliant visuals and an unflagging pace it's ironic that he went onto direct the bloodless Twilight Saga Chapter 3 Eclipse.
It's also a great shame that he sequel Dark Days was a Direct To DVD/ Blue Ray release as 30 Days Of Night fully justifed a big budget cinema release sequel.
This Blue Ray version has all the bonus features of the two disc DVD release but all on one disc, and the fantastic picture quality truly brings out the contrast between the white of the snow and deep red of the blood. As expected the Audio makes every Vampire shrill feel like a needle in your ear drum.
In other words the Blue Ray version is Bloody Brilliant!
Anybody who is a horror fan should enjoy this.
It's a bloody good Evening's Entertainment!

This is one of the few films since Lost Boys where the vampires are portrayed as they should be, brutal, sadistic killing machines.
Its great a well underrated film. For anyone who likes vampire films this should be rite up their street. For everyone else just watch it, its very very good.
Cast is well chosen, acting is not bad and the story works very well.
I had never heard of this film until a week ago, now I wonder why. This movie is VERY good for this genre. Very nice camerawork, and epic video quality, some of the best I have seen on a blu-ray. Josh Hartnett shines and the rest of the crew displays some heavy acting.
Has the best vampires bar none and a good storyline
Missed this when it was on in the cinema, glad I decided to watch it on Blu-ray. The film is interesting and moves along well, some good characters and un expected moments. It's tense and not that predictable either, which some films in this genre tend to be. Some nice special effects which look great in high definition, if you like horror, action films then be sure to watch this.
