In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft III, a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history - brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn - who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, The Great Escape is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven), screenwriters James Clavell (Shogun) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar), and composer Elmer Bernstein.

 Shows its age, but...

...still comfortably better than DVD. As the film is over 50 years old, I guess we have to make some allowances for the state of the original celluloid. The transfer to Blu-ray is mixed. Bits are pretty good, bits an indifferent and bits are quite poor. But there is detail there that I'd not seen before.

As for the film, it's still one of the greats.

 Disapointing HD transfer!

If you already have the DVD, don't bother buying the Blu-ray. The picture is no better than on the DVD. Really wish I hadn't wasted my money on this. Such a shame as it's one of the all time classics, and I was so looking forward to it coming out on Blu-ray. Thick black bars top and bottom of the screen too.
