  OLD SCHOOL RULES!

Arnie has been back more times than I can remember. This is supposed to be his big come back after taking time out from his polital career. But if memory serves be right his comeback was with Epxendables 2 as the he announced " I'm Back!". Anyhow on reflection his comeback was muted to poor box-office results for this old school actioner. The Last Stand is basically a western with sports cars and massive fire power. the plot is simple, nasty Mexican drug dealer escapes prison and makes a run for the border with the help of his personal army but hindered by Arnie being a small border town sheriff who's town is stuck in the middle. With the help of the good old towns folk and the police department they take up arms to stop him. The first forty minutes is a bit of a drag, but things do liven up afterwards with implausable stunts, implausable plot holes and implausable dialogue. In this world 50 cal rounds can shoot you in the arm with just leaving a hole and bullets from assault rifles cannot pass through cars and chairs and you can explode from being shot by a flair gun in the back! But in a funny kind of way it's so bad it's actually entertaining. The action is well staged, the film has it tongue in it's cheek as it knows how dumb it is. Some of the jokes are quite funny, but Jonny Knoxville does irritate and the whole fake hostage situation is pointless and some characters might have not been written in as they have nothing to do. By the final showdown of a race through a corn field leading to Arnie laying down the law with the bad guy. It's all predictable stuff but on the whole it's ok viewing if you're drunk.
It's not the come back we wanted, but when you take into account the last really good film Arnie made was Terminator 2 way back in 1991 this could have been a lot worse.
He's made his last stand now it's time for Arnie to retire with what respect he's got left before he becomes a parody of his former self.

Roadhouse.
Walking Tall.
Red Heat.

Arnie back on form in Last Stand.

I wasn't expecting to like it that much but, oh my, what a treat. It was great action with good tongue-in-cheek humour. Think along the lines of the Expendables but, in my opinion, better. If you like action, comedy, or Arnie - then you shouldn't miss this.

  Time to retire?

I'm a huge Schwarzenegger fan and have been for most of my life. However, it pains me to say it, but its time for him to bow out. He has had phenomenal success given his lack of acting skills, he has battled aliens, mercenaries, robots and school kids but unfortunately he can't fight old age. He looks old, tired and frail now and even with big budgets, this can't be hidden. The film is poor with almost no attempt to create anything new and borrowed plot lines and ideas. Not good.
