This movie confirmed what we had already learnt from "Duel", "Jaws" and "Sugarland Express", that Steven Spielberg was going to be one of the most significant directors to come from tinseltown. Yes he can't hit gold everytime but he certainly did with this one.

As per usual the casting in Spielberg movies is generally spot on as it is here and the script is assured and well executed.

I won't hinder too much on the movie as most of you will know it well enough anyway, safe to say this is a true classic.

You're more interested in the Blu-ray transfer quality side of things aren't you.................................................................

Sony Pictures have come up trumps yet again and are fast establishing themselves as the best at HD transfers especially when visiting the archives of classic cinema.

This movie comes with a MPEG-4 AVC encoded 1080p 2.35:1 framed transfer of the highest quality. Speilberg himself approved the final transfer on all 3 versions included on this release. Now you must appreciate that Spielberg is a true lover of the art of cinema and in particular film itself, so we do have an abundance of film grain but it is purely filmic and remember it's supposed to look like that, this movie is very much of it's time.

The detail is stunning and I was astounded by the detail haboured within the blacks and shadows, I can't detect any crushing or artifacting either. This movie looks incredible I have never seen HD Video look as much like actual film as this release.

It would of been a travesty if this title would have been butchered or compromised by digital enhancing and DNR techniques, the grain structure shows that Sony were not willing to compromise detail in any way and it looks spectacular.

Skin tones are natuaral and warm with fine foreground detail. This looks as near to source material as you could get and trounces the DVD release currently on offer.

THIS DISC IS REFERENCE QUALITY - Highly recommended.
