Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man's confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack's mission is nearly complete.

Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion promises much but fails to fully deliver. This isn't true of every aspect but unfortunately is true in terms of the most important aspect of them all character.

Tron Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski returns with yet another stunningly realised and beautifully detailed world filled with exquisite visuals and luscious vistas. In terms of the movies look it ranks up with the best of the year. Oblivion focuses too much on this at the expense of the most important element character and heart, much like Tron Legacy.

Don't get me wrong there's plenty to enjoy with Oblivion but you can only truly invest yourself in the overall aesthetics. The plot borrows liberally from a few movies past, most notably Moon and the characters may as well be cardboard cut outs. The central themes appear to be identity and love I guess, but the director is more focused on the realisation of future Earth than providing any real heart and emotion with his cast and plot.

Tom cruise plays Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman plays Morgan Freeman on top of that we have some other actors who just melt into the background and the predictable plot will not give you much to chew on. You've seen it all before anyway.

The Transfer........

Universal have granted this movie with an MPEG-4 AVC encoded, 2.40:1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50GB Blu-ray disc of faultless quality.

This could be the best Blu-ray disc I've ever seen, I cannot fault one single aspect. This is certainly a movie to show off your HD set up.

Clarity and detail is staggering with incredible textures and crisp outlines. The depth of the image will really impress. Every strand of hair and pore of skin is clearly visible. Colours are perfectly saturated with deep vibrancy and perfect contrast. The blacks are inky and crush is never a concern. Delineation is absolutely stunning in these darker moments.

Shot digitally so grain is of no concern, we don't suffer any digital or compression artefacts. No banding, ringing, aliasing or haloing.

This is a stunning world delivered in stunning detail.
