  The epitome of reference quality!

This is another movie where a review of the film is not really needed.

Bold, brave, influential, groundbreaking, historic..............take your pick, they all apply. Kubrick is considered a genius and you need only see this to realise that!

A must see and a must own!

The transfer...................

Warner Brothers have granted this movie with a VC-1 encoded, 2.20:1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50GB Blu-ray disc of reference quality. Yesssss!

Shot in glorious 70mm which results in a staggering HD presentation which could of been filmed yesterday if it weren't for the effects and fashions.

This was screened in large multiplexes when initially released in the sixties and it would appear that Kubrick wanted a clean and crisp image, hence the 70mm film stock. This means we had four times the resolution when it was filmed and now have this glorious Blu-ray to enjoy over and over again.

Film grain is practically non existent, again this is due to the 70mm stock, colour is absolutely amazing. The early dawn of man scenes are staggering. The contrast and saturation is faultless.

No edge enhancement, banding, crush or digital artifacting. We also do not suffer any compression issues.

I cannot praise this disc highly enough. The importance of the movie and the quality of the image make this probably the most important disc you will ever buy. Thank You very much Warner Brothers.

Is saying its out of this world too corny?

Movie 5/5 Transfer 5/5

THIS DISC IS REFERENCE QUALITY

Give me a call I'll buy it for you!

Exceptional.

Firstly, i feel very sorry for the guy leaving the negative review. Too long for a film of it's kind? What kind is that? To this day i have never seen anything like this. I guess he was expecting an action packed sci-fi full of aliens and phaser guns.
This is more than just a sci-fi film, it is a beautifully crafted audio visual journey through the growth of our species, and seems rather prophetic. I didn't watch this for years as i expected it to be another normal sci-fi, how wrong i was. This truly is one of the greatest films ever made. As was said before, it is slow... very slow. there's no dialogue until 30 minutes into the film, and the first hour seems like two. There's few films that have struck me this deeply, It is as powerfully artistic as something like David Lynch's "Inland Empire" at the same time as offereing a lot more to the viewer. 2001 takes us through some kind of spiritual journey but although it is rather obscure in meaning and style, it is far more grounded. After the first hour we then get an hour of more traditional film, with characters and dialogue... and the HAL 9000, probably one of the greatest characters of any film to date. I won't give anything away but the final sequences in this section of the film are some of the most creepy and haunting you will ever see. Then it's back to the obscurity and one of the most bind blowing endings ever created.
I always liked Kubrick, but i never knew why he was seen as such a master of film, this one says it all... Nothing could better it, ever.
Also, the special effects look better than most sci-fi's today with no CGI anywhere in wight.
BUY IT NOW!!!! If you like films to be more than just a story, BUY IT!!!

... my mind is going... i can feel it.

my fave film since 1968,seen it thousands of times so the logical step was blu ray.i like to think i have a very good eye for detail..this has been proved with this film.the blu ray transfer is very good but.....certain scenes were not perfect.a slight very vague but noticeable red tinge on certain areas put me off..maybe certain films like this and sleep hollow should not be transferred as it does not always come off..5 stars for the film (obviously) but only 4 for the blu ray edition.

I've always loved this movie but on blu-ray it's absolutely breathtaking. some have reported judder and blur but i'd say this is down to their equipment, i've had motion blur problems with other blu-rays most notably "the dark knight" but watching 2001 in 24p on my sony gave very smooth playback. This film isn't for everyone, it's very slow but as i said it's just breathtaking to see what was achieved with technology of the day, you should think of 2001 as less of a movie and more of a live action painting, just sit back and look in awe at it's glorious technicolor splender.

I watched this whwn I was a lot younger, probably too young, and although I enjoyed it I didn't quite know what to make of it. God I am glad I bought it on BluRay. For a movie made before man went into space and had no real clue what it was like, this is a vision. Beautiful visuals and sound even though it was made a year before I was even born. I now get it. It is open to your interpretation but it was quite profound when I watched it again. For older, wiser minds I think. An amazing BluRay.

I don't think there's anything more to add to a review of this that the excellent reviews below haven't already covered. So, I'll just add my 5 stars, suggest that those who love the film also check out the books, and be on my way.
