Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel up in the secluded mountains of Colorado. Jack, being a family man, takes his wife and son to the hotel to keep him company throughout the long and isolated nights. During their stay strange things occur when Jack's son Danny sees gruesome images powered by a force called The Shining and Jack is heavily affected by this. Along with writer's block and the demons of the hotel haunting him Jack has a complete mental breakdown and the situation takes a sinister turn for the worse.

Please note: This is the UK theatrical cut with a run time of 115 minutes.

 UK version FTW

The transfer is awesome, and the UK cut is much more efficient and effective at telling the story. I don't need footage of Scatman Crothers on a plane to know he's coming to the hotel!...all the US additions add very little to the story. This is Kubrick's preferred version of the creepy masterpiece, and it never looked so good. Got to love the extras too. Ace.

 European better than US version!

I have to disagree with most of the reviews saying that the longer version is better than the European version (It's not just the UK version)
Having a copy of the US version on video tape for many years I rarely watch that version.
Like someone else said it simply extends the film time and adds very little to the story.
I think it helped the US audience understand what was going on, whilst Kubrick trusted the European's to use their intellect!
After all it was Kubrick who reduced the Europeans running time, so I think he knew what he was doing!
Anyway quite possibly one of the greatest horror films of all time.
The blu-ray disk is packed with excellent extras so that finally we have a definitive edition.
Highly recommended.

 A Masterpiece of Modern Horror...

I'm all for Extended Editions of films, in fact I always pray to god that films are released on home video extended. When I learned that the UK wasn't going to be getting the Extended Edition of The Shining on Blu-Ray I wasn't too happy. I still bought the UK Blu-Ray and was thrilled with it, the picture quality, the sound and the extras are brilliant, not to mention that the film is a masterpiece too. But I wanted the Extended Edition.

Recently, I saw the Extended Edition on television and I have came to a conclusion. I am now extremely happy that we never got that version of the film. Okay, the film is still the film, its still a masterpiece, however what the Extended Version doesn't have which the shorter version (which was Stanley Kubrick's preferred version) is the tension. The shorter version is in fact the Director's Cut, and it is a perfect horror motion picture from the greatest filmmaker to ever live, Stanley Kubrick.

(Sergio Leone is a very close second as greatest filmmaker ever, followed by Howard Hawks, Steven Spielberg, Orson Welles and Quentin Tarantino...in my opinion)

The great Stanley Kubrick winds up the tension in this horror classic starring Jack Nicholson in arguably his most iconic role.

The steadicam shots following Danny on his bike through the hotel look amazing on this format as does the chase through the maze (The Shining was one of the first movies to use steadicam).

The extras are great too including a commentary from the steadicam operator and a Kubrick expert plus the interesting behind-the-scenes documentary (watching the perfectionist Kubrick berate Shelley Duvall is worth the price alone).

Its a beautiful transfer and its a real shame Kubrick himself never got to see his movies looking so good. A true horror classic.
