Based on author Philip Pullman's bestselling and award-winning novel, The Golden Compass tells the first story in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.
The Golden Compass is an exciting fantasy adventure, set in an alternative world where people's souls manifest themselves as animals, talking bears fight wars, and Gyptians and witches co-exist. At the center of the story is Lyra, a 12-year-old girl who starts out trying to rescue a friend who's been kidnapped by a mysterious organization known as the Gobblers - and winds up on an epic quest to save not only her world, but ours as well!

I read so many bad reviews of this film but thought i would give it a go anyway and was supprised it very good.
Went straight out and brought the books ok so the books are better but when is that not case and sometimes things that work in a book do not work as well on film
The picture and sound are amazing on the blu ray
Cant wait for the second film just hope they work as the second and third books are much darker.
Keep an open mind!!

I ordered this DVD with some trpidation after all the negative comments I've heard about it. My opinion now is make your own mind up. I was blown away by this film last night. It is simply superb and YES I am a big fan of the books. OK, it doesn't follow the books exactly, but neither did the LOTR films and that didn't stop them being brilliant. I would say the storyline is 90% faithful to the book, the only major departure being the premature end (they also did a similar stunt in LOTR and I don't remember that being criticised). It manages to keep the spirit of the book alive and I, for one, hope they complete the trilogy. I beleive they are already commited to 'The Subtle Knife' so if you want to see this reach a conclusion then BUY THE DVD.
