i saw this at the cinema when released, i enjoyed it then and decided that i would buy on blu-ray because of it's visual presentation.
a fantasy master-class that hits your screen in spectacular fashion,
however it did not really follow the first book 'northern lights' as close as many would have liked.
in truth it would have needed to have been at least 3 hours to ease
the film into the second book, however if you watch the film with no pre-expectation it's a great watch and a must for your 'blu-ray' collection.
i hope they find a way of making a film for each of the next two
books.
this is worth buying for the many scenes that compliment the 'blu-ray' format.
Worthwhile on Blu-ray

Excellent visual quality and not a bad film either. Book transfers are always difficult, often hurried in exposition with the result that much is lost - but luckily it had been quite some time since I read the books - so I couldn't remember much detail. I only know that it ended short of the first book and therefore felt the film ended somewhat abruptly. The young girl playing Lyra is a real gem in the part.
But if you're looking for something worthwhile to show off your Blu-Ray player, I'd recommend it.

It's so horrible seeing all the poor reviews this has been given on the DVD version. I felt this was a fantastic book to movie adaptation. I've read all the books and it felt like the characters were picked out of my head and put on the screen. The acting is superb and the acting of the 12 year-old Dekota Blue Richards is amazing for her age. Alot better acting than Daniel Radcliffe and his crews performances. This film is great and loved every minute of it and watching the visual effects is even better in HD. This film is a great adaptation and is definitely worth a watch and made me want to read the books again (which are also worth a read if you haven't already).
Good fun.

I read so many bad reviews of this film but thought i would give it a go anyway and was supprised it very good.
Went straight out and brought the books ok so the books are better but when is that not case and sometimes things that work in a book do not work as well on film
The picture and sound are amazing on the blu ray
Cant wait for the second film just hope they work as the second and third books are much darker.
Keep an open mind!!

I ordered this DVD with some trpidation after all the negative comments I've heard about it. My opinion now is make your own mind up. I was blown away by this film last night. It is simply superb and YES I am a big fan of the books. OK, it doesn't follow the books exactly, but neither did the LOTR films and that didn't stop them being brilliant. I would say the storyline is 90% faithful to the book, the only major departure being the premature end (they also did a similar stunt in LOTR and I don't remember that being criticised). It manages to keep the spirit of the book alive and I, for one, hope they complete the trilogy. I beleive they are already commited to 'The Subtle Knife' so if you want to see this reach a conclusion then BUY THE DVD.
