Speed Racer lives for racing. He is a born winner with an aggressive, instinctive, and fearless approach to the track. Having racked up victory after victory behind the wheel of his unstoppable Mach 5 vehicle, he faces the deadliest decision of his life - partner up with a rich mogul cheat for safety or risk his life to save the spirit of his sport and compete in the definitive, death-defying, cross country rally, The Crucible.

The death of his brother, the legendary Rex Racer (Scott Porter), in a mysterious racing accident ten years earlier has urged Speed (Emile Hirsch), the son of car-designer Pops Racer (John Goodman), to carry on his brother's legacy. Speed's own success results in the discovery that some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless sponsors led by the sinister Mr Royalton (Roger Allam). In the knowledge that Royalton will see to it that his Mach 5 will never cross a finishing line again if they do not join forces, Speed's fate hangs in the balance as he decides which path to take.

The Wachowski Brothers, creators of The Matrix trilogy, have produced the ultimate live-action adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida's classic 1960s Japanese anime series Mach Go Go Go in this beautifully shot visual feast that will appeal to the whole family. Full of exciting, brilliantly-conceived races, primary-colour characterisations, and an irresistible sense of fun Speed Racer is an entertaining, superbly directed blockbuster that is unlike anything you have seen before.

Speed Racer (2008) is a family racing thriller based on the cult 1960's cartoon. This modern update stars Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox.

The plot is about young driver Speed Racer (Hirsch) who races in a high tech car called the Mach 5 which was built by his father Pops (Goodman).

This movie is directed by Andy & Larry Wachowski (The Matrix) and the special effects and visuals are simply stunning. The Wachowski brothers have created a living cartoon, a trippy kaleidoscope of colours which is like nothing filmed before.

Unfortunately the movie does have problems. The characters are very shallow and cliched with most of the cast delivering over-the-top performances. And the action is so furious and kinetic that at times it's difficult to know what's happening.

Speed Racer's main problem is that it doesn't know what sort of movie it is. It's stunning to look at but has no depth. Its too long and involved for kids but too silly (Spritle & his monkey) for most adults to like.

The movie was a flop and the Wachowski brothers reputation has been knocked but Speed Racer isn't a bad movie. At times it's thrilling and exciting. If only the Wachowski's had worked harder at putting some substance behind those amazing visuals.

 Box office disaster, Blu-ray triumph

Region free as with all Warner Blu-rays (afaik).

This movie was critically slammed and was one of the biggest $ losses when it was released at the cinema last summer. Problem was no one cared for Speed Racer.

The film was aimed at kids but is a tad long and had no real stars to bank on. I thought it was pretty good and a typically Wachowski style of movie.
The picture quality is one of the best i've seen. Fit inducing colours and some incredible effects. The sound does let the package down a bit though, needs a bit more oomf.

Good movie overall and a great blu-ray. Little-uns may get a bit bored though.

 AMAZING!!!!!!

I have just watched the US version and I can say this is the most amazing looking film I have seen on Blu Ray.
The colours seem to be jumping out of my samsung 1080p lcd as if they were alive.
The sounds quality isn't as good as the picture.
The film I also enjoyed.

Speed Racer (Blu-Ray) Movie or Configuration Tool???

Have to say, this was one of the worst films cinematically I have ever seen and only got a hold of it for the kids. No real stand-out stars and a ropy anime/real-life thing going on didn't work.

So much so the kids gave up half way through of this overly long drivel.

The sound was also very poor as I pump this thru a Philips 5.1 system but most seemed to be coming from the fronts? (heard this from a colleague too since)

As for the picture quality/graphics, different story - this Blu-ray could easily be used to configure the contrast and colour hues of Blu-ray players as the colours on display are stunning along with the effects.

Ability to use as a config tool = 5/5

As a movie = 1/5 (at a push)
