This modern update stars Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox.The plot is about young driver Speed Racer (Hirsch) who races in a high tech car called the Mach 5 which was built by his father Pops (Goodman). This movie is directed by Andy & Larry Wachowski (The Matrix) and the special effects and visuals are simply stunning. The Wachowski brothers have created a living cartoon, a trippy kaleidoscope of colours which is like nothing filmed before.Unfortunately the movie does have problems. The characters are very shallow and cliched with most of the cast delivering over-the-top performances. And the action is so furious and kinetic that at times it's difficult to know what's happening.Speed Racer's main problem is that it doesn't know what sort of movie it is. It's stunning to look at but has no depth. Its too long and involved for kids but too silly (Spritle & his monkey) for most adults to like. The movie was a flop and the Wachowski brothers reputation has been knocked but Speed Racer isn't a bad movie. At times it's thrilling and exciting. If only the Wachowski's had worked harder at putting some substance behind those amazing visuals.
