This movie could be the biggest game changer for 30/40 years. When i left the imax in the fall of 2013 i couldn't help but think i'd just witnessed the future of cinema. Alfonso cuaron spent four years developing this masterpiece in modern film making, and his dedication and vision is spectacularly realised.
Cuaron has always been brave in delivering lengthy long tracking shots even during complex action scenes but here he delivers them to jaw dropping effect. It doesn't feel right to label this as just a movie, it's more an "experience". The special effects are staggering but no matter how flashy they look, they always serve a purpose to the scene. Teaming back up with children of men cinematographer emmanuel lubezki has worked wonders as the camerawork is simply incredible, truly mind boggling at times and the visuals are simply beautiful.
It's abundantly clear that this movie will never be served up better than on an imax screen in 3d, but it's still an incredible watch on a 2d hd tv. Even if you do not own a 3d tv i would recommend buying the 3d release as you will no doubt have 3d in your home at some point in the future and it comes with a 2d blu-ray disc to tide you over in the mean time. This is, along with avatar, a movie where the 3d element isn't a gimmick like with the majority of recent 3d releases. It's a perfect blend of camerawork, 3d, effects, soundtrack, all combining to deliver a truly remarkable whole.
The soundtrack deserves a mention too as it is quite unconventional, a mix of electronic tones which get cranked up louder and louder into an orgasmic crescendo which, when combined with the visuals, help provide some of the most tense moments you will ever experience on your living room sofa. I was literally grabbing my jeans so tight i had white knuckles. This is the nearest i will ever get to actually being in space.
I have no doubt that this movie will be viewed in time as being just as significant technically as citizen kane and 2001 were before it. We will still be talking about it in 50 years time as a movie which dared to show us what the future will bring.
Brave, bold, beautiful, loud. A technical masterpiece which deserves the highest respect.
Thank you alfonso, your vision is a marvel.
Warner brothers have granted this movie with an mpeg-4 avc encoded, 2.40:1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50gb blu-ray disc of reference quality.
This whole project was conceptualised during the hd era and is such a technical wonder that it will come as no surprise that the blu-ray picture is without doubt one of the best you will have ever seen.
Colour and contrast are flawless, the blacks and darks are inky and sumptuously rich with no crushing concerns to worry about. The picture depth and clarity is stunning with incredibly fine object detail. Edges and outlines are perfectly resolved and sharp.
Colour timing is exceptional with no issues of anything being over saturated or undercut. We have no digital or compression artefacts to worry about either, no banding, object halos, aliasing, crush, ringing, nothing just a picture which could not look any better when viewed in 1080. Only when viewed in 4k will this look any better.
The dts-hd master audio 5.1 must also get a mention as it's simply incredible.
An absolute must buy and an early entrant in best blu-ray of 2014.
