Sean Connery reprises his role as James Bond in a film that he would later re-make as Never Say Never Again under controversial circumstances.

The thrills never stop as Agent 007 (Sean Connery) goes above the call of duty - and to the bottom of the ocean - to track down a villainous criminal who's holding millions hostage and threatening to plunge the world into a nuclear holocaust!

 Bond underwater

This is where the Bond series allows the gadgets to take over from the plotting. It's still fun - with SPECTRE stealing 2 nuclear weapons and holding the world to ransom - but Connery seems to have become a parody of himself, purring out all his lines and the film's protracted underwater scenes make it seem neverending. The chief villain and Bondgirl are fairly lacklustre too.

It does look spectacular on Blu-ray though. This format totally works as a glorious advertisement for the beautiful Bahamas locations.

 Looks amazing, but...

Top 100 Electronics Reviewer

There's no doubting that Thunderball looks absolutely stunning on Blu Ray. The sumptuous Bahamas locations and the plethora of undersea sequences lend themselves perfectly to the format. What Blu Ray CANNOT do is improve a script and, alas, this 1965 Sean Connery vehicle remains the slowest and dreariest of the "proper" Bond films (although it's nowhere near as bad as its unofficial remake, Never Say Never Again). It has dull villains and even duller women. The two Bond films either side - Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice - were much more fun. Nevertheless, if you value style over substance, this is a worthy addition to you Blu Ray collection for its look alone.

Verdict:
An outstanding picture and sound quality, the Lowry Company in charge of this restoration did an excellent job for the fourth film of the collection, this film couldn't have been watched in better condition than it is today. If you watch carefully, you should notice that the car after the DB5 does not have a door on the driver side for the stuntman to be ready to jump out of the vehicle. The mockups of the plane landing on water and the boat exploding at the end looks more obvious.

Soundtracks:
The English soundtrack is by far the most surrounding and accurate obviously, the German and French made in the 60s are also of good quality.
The Latin Spanish, the original dubbing is quite by far the most amazing using the new remastered soundtrack: they have removed the front centre channel which contains most of the English dialogue and replaced it by the original Spanish dubbing which contains some background noise meaning the special sound effect and music sometimes differ compare to the English soundtrack. The dialogues also taking up all the channels make the depiction of the Spanish soundtrack sounds mono during some part of the film, not all fortunately!

Un-expecting dubbing:
As usual in the early Bond films, the Bond Girls were dubbed. Nikki Van der Zyl, the one who dubbed Ursula Andress in Dr. No dubs the French actress Claudine Auger (Miss France 1958). The reason seemed to be that she could not speak loud enough despite a good command of English.
And also, Adolfo Celi playing Emilio Largo is dubbed by Robert Rietty.

NB: quite surprisingly, Blofeld whose face cannot be seen is played by Anthony Dawson and voiced by Joseph Wiseman (both featuring in Dr. No).
In the French dubbing, it is the German actor Gert Frobe (playing Goldfinger in the previous film as well as speaking fluently French) who dubs Blofeld but not in the German dubbing.

Overall, we are looking at an excellent film technically speaking as always from Lowry. You shall not be disappointed.

 You have no idea....

Ok, firstly i love bond, all of them but especially the old ones. This was the first blu ray disk i had played on my hd ready 19" and i didnt know what to expect having only just got the telly and as it is 720p. I was gobsmacked at the quality of such an old film. It really did blow my mind! Hd is as good as people say and is worth the extra money as long as you dont break the bank on the dvd option. I had never seen this film before on dvd but having seen the others on dvd i know how good this compares. Thunderball is mainly an film set in the sea and it all looked amazing. I cant image how good it be in full hd but i would gladly pay £25 for it as it really is that good. This is highly recommended for any film fanatic who wants a great picture!
