October 1988 and small town USA is about to witness the end of the world. It's home to Donnie Darko, a brilliant but troubled teenager, plagued by terrifying visions of which he alone holds the key to the meaning.

With his class mate and soul mate Gretchen and a mysterious ex teacher, Grandma Death, he must unravel the strange occurrences infecting his school, his home and his life before a horrifying spectre known only as "Frank" can pull Donnie over the edge of his sanity.

One of the Best cult movies of the last Decade

An Excellent, Thoughtful Sci-Fi movie, with a few Intelligent Twists and Turns.
People make it out to be a movie that is hard to understand, which it is on certain level,
But you can certainly still enjoy it on a more basic level, due to the Assured Direction,
Spot on Performances, and the Brilliant 80s feel.

Directors cut takes it to another level!

This is not a review on Blu-ray quality, but about the director's cut. I've loved this movie for years. I rented it back in 2001 and thought it was ok. Then I bought the DVD with directors cut back in 2004 - it changed the whole film for me. The other reviewer said that the added scenes with excerpts from the book dumbed it down or 'removed some ambiguity' - couldn't disagree more. If anything it opens up for even more widespread interpretations. It adds the details which give the movie extra debth. Even the song change in the opening scene sets a different tone from the start, and the added Donnie/Frank scenes also give it a different feel. If you probe around the internet for reviews on the directors cut, you will find that in general it received better reviews than the theatrical. So I'm not the only one... I am writing this review on the basis of the fact that, after watching the driector's cut for years, I saw the theatrical version last night. And to quote Morrissey, It was 'truly disappointing'. For me, at least, the extra 20 min. makes a world of difference!

A wonderful movie, shame about the transfer.

OK, let me start by saying this is a fine movie indeed. The extra 20 mins or so does open the movie out a bit and the little changes are a nice 'suprise'. As an old fan of the movie I really did enjoy it.

But my 3 stars are given mainly because of the picture on this movie. It just lacks any kind of crisp detail, even in the brighter moments of the film. If anything Its only just slightly better than a upscaled dvd. Dissapointing.

Great movie though.. check it out.

Directors Cut Doesn't Really Add Anything To It

| | See all Jokester's reviews (18)

It's been a long time since I've seen the original so the changes in the Directors Cut don't really stand out, just a few minor scenes that didn't really add anything to the story.

The additions that did stand out though were the extracts from the book that are unfortunately in CGI which also serves to highlight the difference in PQ between the originally filmed shots and these new sequences. When I seen the original film it was the ambiguity about what was happening that made it so great as it engaged you in the story and made you think for yourself about everything - was he just ill or were his experiences real (at least within the concept of the tangent universe). The addition of the book excerpts largely removes this ambiguity and tries to explain it in with a poor attempt to shoe horn in an explanation. For me it removes the mystery from the film and as a result I've given it 4 stars.

The original for me is the better film.
