The first direct sequel to a Bond movie is a brutal, pulverising affair as a desolate 007 goes after those behind the death of his lady love in "Casino Royale". In amongst the welter of bruising stunts and adrenalised action lurks the fascinating figure of Craig's Bond - a bit of a violent thug perhaps but a man barely masking his own pain - and the film also acts as an excellent toe-to-toe with a well-deployed Dench as M. The franchise is suitably re-energised in this, it's 22nd entry.

  Surprisingly good

I was in no rush to see this as I've never been a bond fan. They're all a bit samey for me. Throughout the movie I noticed all the rubbish I didn't like about Bond wasnt there, no silly gadgets, no repetitive annoying score which is usually just the theme on a loop in a different key.

Then I saw the other reviews, the Bond fans seem to hate it for the reasons I like it! It's just a shame (for me) that this seems to be a one off.

Terrible title, terrible theme song, terrible story, terrible script, terriblely constructed and terribely filmed... just terrible! A huge stain on what otherwise is an immaculate series.

This is a film best watched in tandem with Casino Royale, as they both explain the origins of Bond's 00 status. Daniel Craig's interpretation of the role has more in common with Ian Fleming's vision of the character than any of the previous versions (with the possible exception of Dalton). Whilst many won't feel comfortable with his hard edged, ruthless 007, Craig carries the role with great conviction, you can believe he is the ruthless assassin whereas Brosnan would probably spend more time preening himself. Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton are a vast improvement over Teri Hatcher and Halle Berry and the twist about villian Dominic Greene wanting to control the earth's most precious resource is interesting. As an introduction to the character, Quantum of Solace sets the tone for what will be Craig's third outing as 007 in 2012. A Bond who lives by his wits and own resources is a refreshing change from hi-tech gadgets and lame brained invisible Aston Martins!. The gun barrel ending announces to the world that James Bond has arrived and, for that, we should be grateful that the franchise is still strong enough to support such a dramatic interpretation of its leading man.

REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD!

Quantum Of Solace may have a posh title, but this is a rough and ready revenge thriller rather than your normal typical Bond outing.
For me the Bond movies are a sign of their times, Connery had the underbelly of the Red threat, Moore was campy 70's self knowing. The very underrated Dalton dealt with the cold war paranoia and Brosnon perfectly ballanced the mid 90's calmer times.
When Daniel Craig came on the scene this was post 9/11 and post Jason Bourne and the world was a much more dangerous place. So the re-boot after the terrible Brosnan swong song Die another Day the series needed a much more dangerous Bond, that Craig perfectly captured in the classy Casino Royale.
Solace is the only Bond movie to be a direct sequel, and is actually the shortest of all the Bond Movies. Picking up moments after Royale ended the story takes Bond on another globe trotting adventure on the hunt for the terrorist organisation Solace for the death of his lover Vespa.
This is a much more gritty Bond movie, and Craig is just a human killing machine as he leads a path of destruction on his revenge fuelled quest. As usual the location are brilliant, and the barron landscapes perfectly match the emotion of Craig (cold, hard and unforgiving) as usual he has a beautiful female partner in the "oh so fit" form of Olga Kurylenko (Hitman, Centurion) as she also has her own agenda of revenge. Kurylenko goes against type cast of the typical bond girl, as she gives a gutsy brainy performance and does not even fall for Bonds charms.
But the film does have a down side, as the plot is a bit thin and messy, and the lead Villian is weak, but what the plot lacks in class, it more than makes up for plenty of gun fire and near misses.
It's not as good as Casino Royale, but it's a differnt kind of film, and watched back to back with Casino Royale, Solace becomes a far more satisfying experience, that should leave most Craig fans waiting for the 2012 release of Bond 23!
The Blue Ray trnasfer is awesome in sight and sound, but the lack of extras is very disappointing. What Solace needs is a release of a Delux Edition.

I've not seen a decent Bond film since Pierce Brosnan left, in my opinion he was the best Bond after Sean Connery.
The films with Craig aren't as interesting or as good as Bond films used to be.
This isn't a Bond film, it's an action film, Bond died when Brosnan left =(

Goldeneye, Tommorow Never Dies, Die Another Day are sooo much better than any Craig Bond film.

  Not a Bond Film!!

| | See all philboy4's reviews (152)

Great film but it isnt a james bond film in my eyes just another popcorn action movie. It does though bring alot of impressive fight and action scenes. Not a big fan of Daniel Craig as bond he hasnt got it nailed yet maybe a few more to settle him. Sean connery and pierce brosman are the top bonds followed closely by roger moore.
