Can't stop the signal...

Beloved television cult director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel) makes a spectacular first foray onto the big screen with Serenity, the cinematic adaptation of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series, Firefly. A mix of space western, comedy, and drama, Serenity follows captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew as they trade their way around the edges of civilized society. Of particular interest are two passengers they take on, Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau), a brother and his telepathic sister on the run from the corrupt governing Alliance. As notorious former members of the anti-Alliance opposition, Mal and his crew make it difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers, it becomes apparent that River harbors both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting powers, and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might just be worth his time.

Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu, as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda, and as a result performed nearly all the stuntwork herself. In addition to the stellar stunts, realistic graphics, and an often haunting score, the film's actors display a rare chemistry that brings viewers both into their lives and into a possible version of humanity's future.

As a huge fan of Firefly, I like many fans was shocked and disappointed when it was cancelled. So when they released a follow up film I was over the moon! The series itself was a breath of fresh air, pretty much Cowboys and Indians in space, almost like having a whole Star Wars series based around Han Solo (whom the lead character bears more than striking resemblance to!). I bought this when it initially came out on DVD and loved every minute of it, so as soon as it came out on Blu Ray I had to buy it. With superb picture and sound quality, I was not disappointed and enjoyed it all over again. With tons of interesting extras I was very glad I bought this!

 Sci-Fi with a western twist

Humour, horror, sci-fi, western, drama, love story, villain...yes believe it or not this movie has them all and it works extremely well. Buffy creator Joss Whedon has triumphed with this witty and entertaining tale of a group of 'outlaws' sheltering a brother and sister from sinister forces. Plenty of great ideas combined with an excellent script delivers what must be one of the most critically underrated sci-fi movies of the last fews years. You don't have to know anything about the Firefly series to enjoy this movie. All this and hi-definition too...bliss!

"This is the captain speaking. We might experience slight turbulence, and then.... explode!"
Great flick, but you might wanna see "Firefly" first. Can be hard to get the story. Hope by the way that "Firefly" will appear on Blue-Ray pretty soon...:)

Serenity is one awesome sci-fi with a brilliant story and a perfect cast, based on Joss Whedons amazing TV series firefly which only ever saw one series before it was cancelled, Serenity basically takes the whole series and gives it closure with a great ending, all the original cast is back and all with a better budget, this is a gem of a film and a must for any fan of cult classic sci-fi movies this is certainly one of them.

 Great Movie, Great Extra's

This is what the 'new' Star Wars trilogy should have been like: great, funny dialogue, interesting characters and plenty of action. The disc has some very cool HiDef exclusives, so if you have the DVD, it's worth upgrading for that as well as picture quality. For best results also pick-up the 13 episode run of 'Firely' - which is a prequel in tv series format (only out on DVD so far). I want a sequel so badly it hurts.
