I already had this film on DVD but would recommend the Blu ray edition as the picture quality and sound are so much better. There are many extras with this disc. Several film commentaries, galleries and a making of, which includes a few comments from Patrica Neal - nice to see her. In my opinion this Robert Wise film is 100 times better than the new version which I shall NOT be purchasing. And well done to the studios for releasing this on Blu ray. Watch and enjoy. Karen S.
One of the all-time classic 'alien threat' SF films, sadly travestied by the eternally robotic Keanu Reeves in the apalling 2008 remake. The spurious love interest is to be expected from the Hollywood filming of any book, but what a shame that they didn't use the twist from the original Harry Bates story 'Farewell to the Master'. In the original, Gort (called Gnut in the text version) is about to leave in the spaceship, and is asked by the reporter to assure his master that Earth's intentions are benign. Gort/Gnut replies with the classic last line of the story -
"You misunderstand," the mighty robot had said. "I am the master".
