Gladiator, Ridley Scott's modern classic, arrives on Blu-ray with more extras than a Roman epic. Russell Crowe stars in a Oscar-winning performance as betrayed General Maximus, in a rollicking swords and sandals spectacular placing you right in the middle of some savage gladiatorial scraps!

The great Roman General Maximus (Russell Crowe - LA Confidential) has once again led the legions to victory on the battlefield. The war won, Maximus dreams of home, wanting only to return to his wife and son; however, the dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris - Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone) has one more duty for the general - to assume the mantle of his power.

Jealous of Maximus' favour with the Emperor, the heir to the throne, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix - Walk The Line), orders his execution - and that of his family. Barely escaping death, Maximus is forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator in the arena where his fame grows.

Now he has come to Rome, intent on avenging the murder of his wife and son by killing the new emperor; Commodus....

don't buy if u own the dvd

what a let down,as this is my favourite film i could not wait for the blu ray it arrived today , it is hardly any better then the dvd version , the only scenes u can really notice the difference are the ones that were not in the theatrical version. so i would save your money and wait for the remastered version as this version does not do it justice

 Much improved

I held off on this because of the much-publicised issues with the video transfer in the original version, but having heard that the remastered version was coming into shops I took the plunge. Sure enough, I got the new version - easiest way to tell is to look for the Pocket Blu logo on the back of the box and check whether the copyright info says 2010 rather than 2009 - and it looks fantastic. Why such a great film couldn't get such treatment before is beyond me, but all is forgiven now.

Excellent film now with suitably excellent audio and video makes an essential purchase for showing off your system.

A great film yes, blu ray quality? not much better over dvd

After a lot of debating i decided to buy Gladiator on blu ray. Initially i was very impressed, i had read a lot of the reviews about the questionable quality. So as i had my blu ray player and dvd hooked up to my tv i decided to put both on and flick between the two to compare.

Yes the blu ray is better, but not as much as i thought it would be. The sound quality is easily better on the blu ray. The picture filled more of the screen on the blue ray but it was not much better then the dvd.

If you already have the film on dvd, and can watch it upscaled then i wouldnt bother with the blu ray. Perhaps if u dont own it on dvd and only vhs then i would say buy it. Or maybe if you can get it at a good enough price.

So in the end i gave this 3 out of 5, should have been totally blown away by such a great film, but i wasn't.

 mines bigger than yours!

well i watched this screened onto the surface of planet earth, with 132,000 speakers suspended around me by angels, whilst the sound was ok, i found i couldnt quite see the blood cells in the blood that was trickling from the inside of his nostril. poor show.
perhaps if i updated the firmware on my sammishui HD 1080p/24hz/200mhz 3D dilithium crystal based projector, then it might be a little bit better, but i doubt it.

I got the original release and was mortified by the transfer. Had it exchanged for the re-master. Massive improvement!
Excellent transfer, excellent sound, brilliant film........
