2 Studio's Cut...Vishnudata | 25/04/2009 | See all Vishnudata's reviews (1)Let me start off by saying I love the Chronicles of Riddick and would give this blu-ray a 5 star if it were in fact the Theatrical Cut. This blu-ray version of the Director's Cut is just... well I seem to get the impression it is more of a Studio's Cut or more precisely the Stupid Audience's Cut. All the new cuts you see in this were probably in the script to satisfy the studio's audience of idiots and they shot it all on set however when they got to the editing room their proper filmmaking instincts kicked in and made it work. All the nice scenes that gave it volume, mystery and depth have been taken away and replaced with childish, pointless, character-diluting scenes. The film itself has a lovely subtle attack on religion and the theme of bad versus evil is rarely done and thus makes it very unique. Vin Diesel plays this character very well, he doesn't make great challenging films often but it is nice to see him in a more serious, deep-rooted character and shine successfully. To specify in more detail some of the problems with this Director's Cut are: Normally in proper film storytelling you can say more by showing rather than saying, this is not the case in this new cut, in the original cut it had very neat, obvious but quick emotions and actions to push the story and characterisation forward which worked brilliantly. It's frustrating to see professional actors having to repeat things several times over to the audience which were already understood earlier.Another thing are the childish sex references which would appeal to none other than sex offenders... the original cut was already sexy without shouting it. Great looking actors, fantastic world and brilliant colour palette. Also, whilst you are watching this blu-ray Director's Cut every time they extend a clip it jumps a few frames due to timeline editing issues which is off putting to be honest and just makes it all the more obvious where they added all the rubbish. It's lazy. But I'm afraid to say that this Director's Cut is a waste of time, which is a big shame because it is on blu-ray... you would think they could have added both theatrical and director cuts on the disc as an option, then I would give it a 5 star and this review would be much shorter. To conclude, buy the DVD version with the original cut. Wonderful film with it's original cut.
