 A fierce and funny caper

| | See all Quagmire1984's reviews (25)

From writer and director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels and Snatch) comes a brilliantly funny crime caper with plenty of action and an all-star cast.

The film is about an old-school London gangster called Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson) who decides to swindle a wealthy foreign Mob boss with some property dealings, but in time both are getting played by a small crew of crooks. Things soon start to escalate out of control when a painting belonging to the foreign mob boss goes missing.

The Blu-Ray picture is excellent and the sound is superb.

Special features on the disc include:

* Commentary by writer/director Guy Ritchie & Co-Star Mark Strong
* Additional Scene : Will you put the cigarette out
* Blokes, Birds and Backhanders: Inside RocknRolla [in High-Definition]
* Guy's Town: The director reflects on his fascination with ever-evolving London [in High Definition]

 Guy Ritchie's Return To Form.

RocknRolla (2008) is a British crime movie starring Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Toby Kebbell, Jeremy Piven and Tom Wilkinson.

After the awful Swept Away and disappointing Revolver this movie is a return to form for director Guy Ritchie. Its back to the genre that he knows best.

The story is quite good but its the humour and the characters that make this movie so good. Ritchie also delivers some great action scenes using creative visuals and inspired music perfectly.

The ensemble cast are also terrific. Butler, Elba and Hardy share very funny chemistry as The Wild Bunch and Wilkinson delivers a suitably nasty performance. Mark Strong is very cool and Toby Kebbell almost steals the movie.

Ritchie has claimed that Rocknrolla is the first part of a trilogy of movies and there's certainly a lot of characters that could be further developed in future movies.

Guy Ritchie is back on top of his game with this movie, an awesome caper with some great characters getting in very bad situations. The balance of comedy and violence is very well spread; the cast is great as usual, well worth a watch.

 Boring Mockney ganster flick....

The title says it all - yet another Guy Ritchie film set in the London underground (not the tube trains!).

So boring i never saw the end....

 Pretty Cool British Gangster Movie

Enjoyed this, movie nowhere near as good as Lock Stock or the Classic that is SNATCH.
The story was ok, not as thrilling or cool as it thinks it is.
The characters as usual make Guy Ritchies movies and the main Boys in this movie were Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong and the guy playing the Rapper.
Gerard Butler was too smooth for my liking, it all seemed a bit too easy for him.
The locations used in London added a lot of atmosphere to proceedings.
Good watch by no means great.

 LONG LIVE ROCKNROLLA!

After 'Revolver' I was a tad suspicious that this might just be another wasted journey. WRONG! This is Guy Ritchie back on form with a rollicking good tale, superbly directed & great performances from all. The 1080p blu-ray transfer is beautiful, with a deliberate, stylised, almost sepia tone to a very sharp & detailed picture - the DolbyTrueHD also rocks when called upon to do so & dialogue is always crisp & clear. Can't wait for the promised sequel 'The Real RocknRolla'! Highly Recommended & a worthy addition to your BD collection...

Good Film, just unoriginal from Guy Ritchie.

I must say that if lock stock and snatch had never been released, this film would have been excellent.
However, although the film is enjoyable, i could not help thinking of the similarities between this and lock stock and snatch. Think of the guns in lock stock and the diamond in snatch.... The endless people hunting for it, the running around trying to steal it back etc etc. This is basically redone in this movie, but with a painting... That you do not get to see....

This part also reminded me of the suitcase sceanrio in pulp fiction, so again, seemed another persons idea, not guy ritchies.

Its good he has gone back to basics, but using the same blue print for 3 differnt films is a little risky. Maybe next time he can expand on his ideas more.

However, compared to his last offering, revolver, which was poor, this was a much better film.

I would defo recommend to rent first, rather than impulse buy.

Hope this review helps.

 Good? Yes Great ? hmmmm

Watched this film expecting a film in the class of lock stock or snatch and unfortunately the film didn't deliver on that.
Dont get me wrong, the film is good but after about 45 mins and if you like guy richues previous film, you'll guess whats going to happen.
Also , i agree with the previous reviewers comments, the film just doesn't have the humour which made lock stock and snatch such brillaint films.
Worth a rent?, yes
Worth a buy? Again , i think so.
Just dont over expect
