 Brutal. Riveting. Unmissable.

This Gripping 50s set Film Noir about Police Corruption and more knocked me for six when it first came out in 1997.
It is Brutal, Complex and Tough as Nails. The story is challenging and exciting all the way through. The recreation of a bygone Los Angeles is impeccable.
The ensemble cast are all in fine form. Russell Crowe let Hollywood know he was in town with a performance of Boiling Hot rage, which when spills out is terrifying. Guy Pearce is equally good, in a less showy role.
Kevin Spacey is pure class. James Cromwell and Danny De Vito leave a significant mark.
Kim Basinger won the Oscar for Supporting Actress, i found her performance to be good, not great.

But for me the real star of this show is director Curtis Hanson for assembling the perfect cast and then getting excellent performances from each and everyone of them, for directing the supposedly unfilmmable James Ellroys Novel without missing a beat, and above all for making the damn thing so unpredictable and exciting.

A Must Watch

We know it is a great film , it is just a pity the transfer isn't . It is far better than the dvd but i expected a much sharper picture and sound for such a classic film

This movie needs no further comment - however this is aimed specifically at the quality of this BD transfer which other reviewers have slated as merely an 'upscaled dvd' - not so, folks! This 1080p image sparkles from begining to end with a sharp & very detailed picture that is streets ahead of the SD - colours are rendered beautifully, with great contrast levels & deep inky blacks & makes for a great High Def transfer in every way - likewise the DoblyTrueHD soundtrack is spot on! Trust me, you won't be disappointed. A great movie on a great disc...Highly Recommended!

 Upscaled DVD?!

'L.A. Confidential' is an excellent neo-Noir.

The audio has improved a lot, in comparison with the DVD. However, the image/video is rather disappointing, like a DVD ripp-off. I therefore disagree with it's pricing.
This movie deserves an excellent, let's say, a real Blu-ray transfer!

 Extras problem?

The film is, of course, magnificent, but the menu sucks big time, the hd transfer is only decent and all the extras seem to be of quality slightly superior to youtube videos, misleadingly labeled as "SD"... what the hell? Is it my copy or do you all have a problem with the extras picture quality? How could they have released it that way?

 Poor transfer

While this is an excellent movie and a must have for any collection the video quality is very similar to what you would get with an upscaled DVD. The audio is very disappointing. This blu-ray disk is a perfect example of a studio trying to make a quick buck without making any effort. There will be a lot of blu-ray disks like this one in the future. I, for one, will be waiting for this to be released again.

Excellent move - Rubbish transfer for Blue Ray. Picture is well mediocre, and even the audio is dodgy - some scenes even appear a little out of sync (and it is definitely not my system). My advice, stick with the SD copy.
