This Gripping 50s set Film Noir about Police Corruption and more knocked me for six when it first came out in 1997.
It is Brutal, Complex and Tough as Nails. The story is challenging and exciting all the way through. The recreation of a bygone Los Angeles is impeccable.
The ensemble cast are all in fine form. Russell Crowe let Hollywood know he was in town with a performance of Boiling Hot rage, which when spills out is terrifying. Guy Pearce is equally good, in a less showy role.
Kevin Spacey is pure class. James Cromwell and Danny De Vito leave a significant mark.
Kim Basinger won the Oscar for Supporting Actress, i found her performance to be good, not great.
But for me the real star of this show is director Curtis Hanson for assembling the perfect cast and then getting excellent performances from each and everyone of them, for directing the supposedly unfilmmable James Ellroys Novel without missing a beat, and above all for making the damn thing so unpredictable and exciting.
A Must Watch
