Raging Bull is arguably the finest work from the Scorsese and De Niro partnership. De Niro gives an amazing portrayal of a man whose animal side lurks just beneath the surface, ever ready to erupt. Vivid and unremitting in its uncompromising brutality and honesty, the fight sequences are famed for their realism.

Violent throughout, this film is a testament to Scorsese's and De Niro skills, creating a thoroughly absorbing film about such an unlikable character.

Renowned for throwing himself into the roles of the character, De Niro went on a diet to gain fifty pounds during the production for the role of the faded star.

The story of Jake La Motta's rise & fall is not an easy story to watch.
But the film is so well Filmed, Directed and Acted, you cant take your eyes off it.
Its not the sort of movie you watch every few months, but even one viewing will leave its Greatness ingrained on you.
It is a powerful movie, about Jealousy, Obsession, Love, Inner Demons and Boxing

Martin Scorsese should have definitely won his first Best Director Oscar for this, but didnt.
I believe, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas are his Ultimate Masterpieces.
The film is shot in beautiful Black and White and 30 Years later it still feels fresh as ever.
The Boxing scenes are Expertly executed. Short and Brutal with sickening sound effects.

And now we come onto the Acting. This is of course also the movie that won Robert De Niro his only Best Actor Oscar.
And he is AMAZING in it. His body language, his emotional outbursts, and his quiet moments of reflection.
Easily ONE of his Top 5 performances.
The dedication De Niro put in as part of his Method Process pays off Spectacularly for him and the viewer.
He trained with the real Jake La Motta and other professionals and reached at a level where he could have fought professionally.
Production was also shut down, so he could gain 60lb to portray the older Jake La Motta.
But the Method to the Madness is only a small part of a Great Movie
Joe Pesci also gives one of his best perfomances as the brother of Jake La Motta

A Must Watch for any serious film fan.

 BRUTAL CLASSIC!!!

Based on the true story of boxer Jake La Motta, De Niro puts in his finest acting performance and deservedly won the Oscar for best actor. The fight scenes have brutal realism, and that's not just inside the ring. There are plenty of highs and lows with both his wife and brother (played the brilliant Joe Pesci). The whole film is in black and white and in my view it was a masterstroke as it seems like you are actually there. Scorcese/De Niro/Pesci, always a knockout combination!!!!

One of the GREATEST films of all time!

One of the greatest films ever made. Scorsese gritty film noir epic of troubled Boxing Great Jake Lamotta is fanstastic. In my opinion this is Robert De Niro's Greatest Performance. Fans of De Niro will point to both Don Corleone in The Godfather Part II or Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver as serious rivals & as good as they were, nothing shows De Niro's full range as Raging Bull. Not only mentally but physically as De Niro admitted he gained weight by eating tubs of ice cream daily to show Lamotta at his most bloated & older age but then went an exhausting phyical regime to show the younger fearsome Lamotta in the ring. Whilst taking nothing away from Stallone's Rocky Series or Will Smith's Ali, this is THE definitive Boxing film. Truly remarkable. 5 stars but could easily be 6.!!!!!
