Review

Ryan (Troy Gentile), Wade (Nate Hartley) and Emmit (David Dorfman) attend their first day at high school and they're pumped...until they meet up with Filkins (Alex Frost), a school bully who comes off like a little Hannibal Lecter.

Before they become completely engulfed in Filkins' reign of terror, they seek out some protection by placing an ad in the Soldier of Fortune magazine. Their best response - and the cheapest - comes from Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his luck soldier of fortune who lives a homeless - he likes to say 'home-free' - existence on the beach.

Drillbit Taylor (2008) is a rather lame comedy starring Owen Wilson, Leslie Mann, Danny McBride and a bunch of kids.

The plot is about a group of geeky kids who are bullied at their new high school and decide to hire a low-budget bodyguard (Wilson) to protect them.

The cast of this movie are really poor. Wilson looks uninterested and appears to be on autopilot. The female lead Leslie Mann is given nothing to work with and her character barely registers. Even the kids fail to be anything but annoying. Only McBride manages to raise a few laughs.

Director Steven Brill (Mr Deeds) has made a career out of very average comedies and Drillbit Taylor is true to form. Amazingly this movie was produced by Judd Apatow (Knocked Up) and co-written by Seth Rogen (Superbad). It's even based on a John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) story.

This could have been a far better movie. It's not funny and the plot is just ridiculous (Wilson as a tough bodyguard?).
