After first viewing, Zack and Miri Make A Porno went straight to the top of my 'Best of 2008' list.
I'm a big fan of the amazingly talented Elizabeth Banks and have to admit to having an inappropriate crush on Seth Rogen, so it was always going to appeal, but I was more than pleasantly surprised by just how much I loved this film.
Rogen shines as a chubby, bearded amateur auteur who slowly comes to grips with his true feelings toward Miri when their shoestring production squeaks to completion. Banks charms as Zack's "just friends" roomie who agrees to screw him on-screen for the sake of their movie.
The supporting cast give inspired performances, especially Jason Mewes, who works weirdo magic as Lester, a tattooed sex freak who'll do anything on camera. Craig Robinson also rules as reluctant producer Delaney.
Zack and Miri is not a beautiful movie, smeared as it is with outdoor shots of icy streets and slush-covered suburbs. But the scene where Zack and Miri finally get together for the porno is shot beautifully by Kevin Smith - Elizabeth Banks seems to glow through the whole scene.
The extras on the Bluray disc are amazing and definitely make the film a value-for-money must buy. There is well over an hour of deleted scenes (including an amazing 'follow-up' scene with Zack and Miri); tons of bloopers and ad-libs; an amazing improv duel between Rogen and Justin Long (aka Brandon St. Randy!); plus many more extras.
Buy it, you won't regret it!
