This is a truly stunning film with superb peformances from all the cast. Meryl Streep is the principal of a school in New York in 1964. It is the year before the Roman Catholic Church made sweeping changes to its doctrine and rule.
The young charismatic priest is hounded out of the school by the principal predominantly because he is progressive and wants to blow away the centuries of ritual and tradition.
The atmosphere of the film is one of tension and anticipation as to what will happen next.
The performances are all understated and there are hidden nuances in all the scenes especially those between the principal and the priest.
It is clear to see that the film was originally a a stage play, but the acting is not at all 'stagey'.
The differences between life for the nuns and the life of the priests is well drawn and accurate.
For example the sisters eat a simple meal almost in silence. The priests have wine and cigars and there is a buzz of conversation and camaraderie.
Some of the scenes are very symbolic and I look forward to seeing the film again in order to re-examine them.
A truly remarkable film.

 Undoubtably good
