When an estranged daughter (Hathaway) returns to her family home for her sister's wedding, the effects on the family dynamics are obvious. Conjuring up both heartbreaking and hilarity, this romantic comedy tells a family tale with no lack of subtlety.

Rachel Getting Married (2008) is a drama about a young troubled woman getting out of rehab to attend her sisters wedding and reunite with her family.

Anne Hathaway was Oscar nominated for her performance. Her character is both self-centered and sarcastic but she also manages to make the audience feel for her. This is a career best performance from Hathaway who is best known for her fluffy romantic comedies.

Rosemarie DeWitt is also terrific as the sister who tries to love Hathaway's character despite all of her problems. Oscar winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence Of The Lambs) shoots the movie using hand-held cameras and seems to have encouraged his cast to give very naturalistic performances.

There are problems with this movie though. Too much time is spent on the traditions of the wedding (speeches/songs) but the amazing performance of Hathaway manages to keep the audience engaged. This is a good movie with truly jaw-dropping acting from Hathaway.

Because Rachel Getting Married was shot on a small budget using hand-held cameras the picture quality isn't great so there's not much benefit from the Blu-Ray. But there are some good extras including two commentaries.

 Outstanding performances and excellent film

I bought this film blind, and on the strength of the reviews I had read about. Let me start by saying that the price of 5.99 alone makes this a must buy, as it is a truly wonderful film that is very moving. Anne Hathaways performance in this blows you away, and she is outstanding as the main lead. I dont agree with the other review here, in that I found the films structure and pace just perfect. Its a very moving film, with a few scenes quite disturbing emotionally. The Bluray boasts a fine picture quality, and whilst not demo standards retains a sharpness throughout, with the outdoor scenes in particular very impressive. For the price this is a must buy, if not to see one of the best acting performances from Anne Hathaway
