In The Day The Earth Stood Still, a remake of the classic 1951 science-fiction film, Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot, Gort, and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by a species watching from afar.

A very good remake, I really enjoyed the movie. If this was not a remake more people would say that they enjoyed it a lot more. A bit like "it's not as good as the book" comments, very easy to say but is it really any help? The FX are very good the story is very well told and the acting does carry the film despite what some people are saying he is ment to be emotionless he is an alien after all! If you like sci fi and want simply to be entertained then you will like this film, if you are a purest then you will want to see the film to make many comparions between this and the 1950's version and even then there is a chance that you might still see some virtues is this version.

 is it 1951?

ok seems that a lot of people who have seen the 1951 version don't like this version. if you have not seen the 1951 version and don't want to watch black and white, cheesy looking 50's robots and effects, then you will like this. The only down sides i saw was the annoying kid and its only 99 mins long. in all if your not stuck in the past classic movies then you will enjoy it.

I was a huge fan of the original 1951 film which was a classic, I was so excited and had great expectations for the new version which surely to god would be easy to replicate, the original required updating with some cool special effects but no they just destroyed it, the script was more destructive than Klaatu & the Robot put together LOL. Who wrote the script....'Roy Chubby Brown'? All that was missing was the Robot performing the moonwalk dance, worst film ever along with 'Green Street 2'. Picture the opening scene 'Spaceship lands...the army arrive...the alien walks out to offer peace with a handshake ...the most important encounter of mankind and the army just blast the alien (Klaatu) away' what? Also, Klaatu after life saving surgery demanded to talk to world leaders who were all meeting nearby for some other issue, however wait for it...the President and other world leaders were too busy to talk...what? the most important encounter of our time and everybody is too busy to talk, then Klaatu escapes from containment and meets up with another alien, at 'MCDONALDS', who has lived among us for 70 years to report about our treatment towards the planet, Klaatu decides to destroy the human race after this meeting LOL you want more funnies I hear you say...the army kept on trying to destroy the spaceship and the robot even though it wasn't hostile to anybody ha ha ha ha 'hey dufus' what shall we try next...we've tried blowing it away but it still won't move...lets entrap this 50ft steel robot and drill holes in it LOL next scene..it can't harm us we're protected by a sheet of glass and if it moves we'll hurt this robot (note: they tried blowing it up with nukes, not even a scratch) by torching it that'll keep it under control LOL who makes this up, these people are thieves, lets remake a classic film and make a mockery of it, lets see how bad we can make it and ask us pay £20 to watch it...disgusting. So many flaws it just doesn't get any worse than this, so so so bad.

A excellent update of the 1950's classic!!!

I can't believe all the bad reveiws this film is getting; maybe they are not si-fi fans or don't understand the message behind this version. The original version of The Day The Earth Stood Still was an antiwar film as it was set and filmed during the cold war in the 1950's. This new version is set in present day and is telling people that we need look after our earths environment, because we are slowly killing it in the way that we treat it. This really is a real problem that we are facing right now and we have to think long and hard in how we can be a far more greener race of people. Keanu Reeves is a little spooky as the alien and the robot is at least 20ft tall. There is great support from Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, John Cleese and Jaden Smith (who is Will Smiths son). The special effects are fantastic and the reworked story is done very well indeed. The original will always be the best but for me anyway this is a far superior remake then War Of The Worlds which was a real disappointment. The blu-ray transfer is ace and if you like your si-fi then hopefully you will enjoy this film too.

Don't believe all the bad reviews

I can't believe some of the negative reviews. The original is a B movie classic and this is a very modern day follow up in the same class, saw it at the cinema expecting it to be a bit dismal but was very pleasantly surprised. Great effects, a poignant message for mankind and some good performances. I liked the fact that Gort remained pretty much unchanged from the original 50's look. Can't wait to get this on blue Ray
