Jefferson Steel (Burt Reynolds) is an ageing Hollywood action hero. He's vain, insecure and out of work. In a final attempt to find Jefferson work, his incompetent LA agent stumbles upon the perfect role playing King Lear at Stratford-upon-Avon.

But, Jefferson arrives in the UK to discover that instead of an RSC production, he is booked to tread the boards with an amateur dramatic society in sleepy English village Stratford St John. A clash of cultures with comic complications ensues in this funny and ultimately moving comedy.

A modern old fashioned Ealing comedy

A great cast with a very good script covering well worn material with a modern setting. If you like old fashioned British comedies then what more could you ask for? Reynolds shines as the obnoxious American stuck by circumstance in a sleepy backwater littered with a host of British actors who, if the names don't ring any bells (you've never heard of Imelda Staunton?), then the faces most certainly will. Its a rights of passage movie for the over 50's. You know it will end ok and you know no-one is going to explode, but a surprise ending is not the point of the film. Clever observations on the most human of situations, peppered with comedic moments that are not nasty or vicious, but will ring bells in most people of the aforementioned age group. Great for cold evenings with a hot cuppa and the telly on. Go on surprise yourself, not all the best films are cinema blockbusters.
