     Concerning AR

some reviewers that say you lose some of the top and bottom if you crop to 16:9 this is true, not true if you stretch

but paramount added black bars to left and right when they could of just left it in full frame 4:3 and let the user decide to stretch to 16:9 or keep in 4:3 all hd tvs have this feature.

ie if you have a 16:9 full format with no picture loss you can easily go to 4:3(the tv adds soft coded black bars), but 16:9 (4:3 picture+ hard coded black bars) you cant go full frame (16:9) without ripping and re-encoding and cutting the bars off.

     KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was a bit concerned about the CGI but they have done a great job to keep the look as close to the original as possible. You can even flick between the old and the new on your remote to see the difference.

JAW - DROPPING!!! A MUST BUY!

i already had all 3 series on dvd, so was a bit hesitant replacing them. so glad i did! in fact, my jaw is still on the floor! the picture is perfect. the colours vibrant, and the CGI ship, planets and scenery etc just enhance an already fantastic series.also, what it shows are the little things, such as shatner's eye-liner,and that the pointed side-burns were painted on! the extras are good too. dont think about it, buy it!

     Dubious at first

When I got this, I was a little dubious about the new special effects they added but on watching the entire series I'm astonished. They have improved the visuals and yet stuck to the 1960's style of filming. The ships look perfect and yet move in a similar fashion to the original models.

If you're a die hard fan, they even include each episode as it appeared in the 60's but with a good deal of cleaning on the film!
A must buy for all Star Trek and Blu-ray fans!

     To boldly go into HD...

After the failure of the HD-DVD format, Star Trek has finally entered the world of HD on the Blu-Ray format.

Note on the picture size, Star Trek was shot on 4:3 in the 60s and Paramount have used the original filming negatives to get best picture conversion quality, doing this process in 16:9 would cut almost a quarter of the picture you would see, so they have quite rightly stuck with 4:3. So you can be assured there is nothing wrong with your TV or player. The picture is supposed to be like that, if you have a TV & player like mine, it will auto adjust for best picture quality & size. You'll see that the optimal picture will run in 16:9 mode, but will look slightly bigger than 4:3. Watching in actual 4:3 mode makes the picture look "squashed".

A nice option is being able to view/listen the episodes in either their very original effects from the 60s or their new enhanced effects. This lets fans have their cake and eat it too. You can even switch from the new/old effects as you're watching, however with the other effects option being treated as another "angle" for you to view, you'll find your player pops up with a new angle notification every time a special effect comes up. I found this quite an annoyance and had to turn off my on-screen messages on my player to get rid of it. Check your player's display setup if something similar happens to you.

On the new effects themselves, at first I really didn't like the outer space shots of planets & the Enterprise, I thought looked pretty fake & very CG looking. Other shots such as simple things like stars going by on a window/display screen were great and integrate seamlessly. Other shots such as vibrant lighted buildings put into the background on populated planets I thought was a nice touch and they look great as well. Nice touches like that make it that little more believable, especially for this show when trying to keep it cheap was the priority over making it look good. It will take you a bit to get use to the new look Enterprise and planets but I've nothing but praise for the other enhanced effect shots.

Special features that were on the DVD version are also on this version as well, difference from the DVD is that these features are spread throughout all 8 discs and not on 1 "features" disc. Also included is a nice documentary on the changes made in getting Star Trek to enter the HD world and the "Enterprise Inspection Tour" is also available.

Overall a very good buy at £50, packed with a lot of special features every Star Trek fan will enjoy. I look forward to seeing the rest of the shows on HD.

There's nothing else left for me to say apart from:
