Note to the previous reviewer, who said the special effects "could have done with the Lucasfilm touch"... the FX in this movie were by ILM! Honestly, do know your facts.
Anyway, the Blu-ray transfer is pristine, it's the only one of the six original crew movies that has been properly cleaned and remastered sufficiently well. The others all vary in quality, with The Motion Picture being a particular disappointment with so much dirt left on the images. Unacceptable for this format, especially on such massive films from a big studio.
It's been a while since I've seen this, but in terms of suspense and games of cat and mouse, this certainly trumps many films and not just in the sci-fi genre. To watch Kirk and Khan trying to out-wit each other at every turn is mesmerising and the acting is pretty spot-on as well. As a Star Trek movie it's great, but as a stand-alone film it holds it's own against some pretty stiff competition. The transfer to Blu-Ray has done it the world of good (although post Star Wars in 1977 and 1980, the effects could have done with the Lucasfilm touch in '82) and the sound is incredible. The extras include a few new additions for Blu-Ray, and the rest come from the DVD release. A good couple of commentaries round this off a as a great package. Recommend this to Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike as both should enjoy it immensely.
What more can I say? Well the Acting by William Shatner Is truly amazing, spocks pure logical mind is what saves the crew I think! The Blu-Ray quality is 10/10!. Sound quality is outstanding as the surround sound given out by the blu ray is pure astonishment.
This film looks fantastic on blu ray really it does and it's easy to see why many critics and fans say it is the best of all the Star Trek films but I have to say I am disappointedthat it is only the theatrical cut and not the 2002 Director's Cut shown on Channel 4 a few weeks ago however it looks gret especially as it is 28 years old and the special features are quite interesting!
at first i was underwhelmed. picture quality, initially, was marginally better than the normal dvd. this was because, as i have the first 2 original series remastered on blu ray, i was expecting the very same standard, particularly as the original series was years earlier. however, in saying that, once the movie got underway, the improved picture quality was evident.not enough to go 'wow', hence why i have given 4 stars instead of 5, but a vast improvement to the original. just have a question though. why is this the only movie out of the original movies, to be 'fully' remastered? bizarre.
