 Just watched 'The Motion Picture'

Amazing......I've just watched the first film on Blu-Ray and it is stunning in HD! As expected everything is so clear and crisp and the colours are vibrant - filmed in 1979 but it looks new! Watched the trailer which was obviously released at the time and you can really see the work that has been done on these films in Blu-ray.

Actually happy they have released the orginal theatrical versions and no faffy extra scenes with all the then modern CGI because like another poster said - the CGI would look shocking on Blu-ray.

Just to point out that the boxset cover does not have that rubbish footer saying the films feature Kirk and Spock - its just a nice heavy cardboard case with a plastic sleeve.

 A Quality Release

Whilst most viewers will have seen or owned various earlier versions of the Star Trek movies, they should consider investing in this release. Blu-ray offers the best picture and sound buty can often be let down by poor transfers of older films. I was not expecting that much of the first couple of movies in this set but how wrong I was! Star Trek The Motion Picture did not look or sound this good when I saw it at the cinema in December 1979! The print is razor sharp without a hint of edge enhancement or artefacting. The tones of the movie are muted but here offer up a pallet of gorgeous reality. The rich skin tones. aztec markings of the Enterprise and the threads which are visible in the uniforms all make this a must own movie. In fact I have never enjoyed the movie so much and went back very quickly to review it with the commentary track.

The other movies are similarly good looking although strangely the Wrath of Khan seems to have had its colours toned down on this transfer. Whilst still a vast improvement on the original releases back in the 80s I would have liked a bit more depth of colour on this movie. By the time we reach Star Trek VI the prints look even better.

Extras are a mixed bag - even though much of the "Directors Edition" material is missing from the firsat movie there are still a few gems tucked away in the 6 movies' discs, whilst the 7th is a rather unusual "Captains' Summit" hosted by Whoopi Goldberg.

Overall this is the best release of the original 6 movies I have ever seen and well worth the current price. A must for any Trekker who has upgraded to HD

Great package but has bits missing

| | See all TheSithlord's reviews (2)

I have seen these films many times and noticed in say "The undiscovered country", bits were missing. When Sulu says to increase speed, an officer says the ship will "fly apart" so Sulu responds "fly her apart then" and when a clingon has fallen from the gantry in the last scene they see red blood so they pull the mask off and it's a senior Star fleet officer (or ODO from DS9) and that's just the ones I spotted. Why did they cut them out? Not a directors cut, which should make it longer!

This is what Blu-Ray was made for

Received these today and have just flicked through each disc. All I can say is absolutely fantastic! If I have anyone say to me again there's no difference between DVD and Blu-ray I'll scream. Crystal clear picture, rich, vibarant colour and sound that's clear as a bell.
The whole package is top notch, including the 3D Enterprise on the card outer sleeve. Highly recommended.

 Missing disc

Anyone else's disc 5 (the final frontier) missing from the box? The strange thing is the box doesn't look big enough for another disc? or am i missing something?
