Whilst most viewers will have seen or owned various earlier versions of the Star Trek movies, they should consider investing in this release. Blu-ray offers the best picture and sound buty can often be let down by poor transfers of older films. I was not expecting that much of the first couple of movies in this set but how wrong I was! Star Trek The Motion Picture did not look or sound this good when I saw it at the cinema in December 1979! The print is razor sharp without a hint of edge enhancement or artefacting. The tones of the movie are muted but here offer up a pallet of gorgeous reality. The rich skin tones. aztec markings of the Enterprise and the threads which are visible in the uniforms all make this a must own movie. In fact I have never enjoyed the movie so much and went back very quickly to review it with the commentary track.
The other movies are similarly good looking although strangely the Wrath of Khan seems to have had its colours toned down on this transfer. Whilst still a vast improvement on the original releases back in the 80s I would have liked a bit more depth of colour on this movie. By the time we reach Star Trek VI the prints look even better.
Extras are a mixed bag - even though much of the "Directors Edition" material is missing from the firsat movie there are still a few gems tucked away in the 6 movies' discs, whilst the 7th is a rather unusual "Captains' Summit" hosted by Whoopi Goldberg.
Overall this is the best release of the original 6 movies I have ever seen and well worth the current price. A must for any Trekker who has upgraded to HD
