An epic film that "re-creates in stunning detail one of the most disastrous battles of World War II"(The Hollywood Reporter), A Bridge Too Far is a spectacular war picture. Painstakingly recreated on actual battlefield locations and boasting a remarkable cast that includes Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Sir Laurence Olivier and Robert Redford, A Bridge Too Far accurately recaptures the monumental scope, excitement and danger behind one of the biggest military gambles in history.

In September 1944, flush with success after the Normandy Invasion, the Allies confidently launched Operation Market Garden, a wild scheme intended to put an early end to the fighting by invading Germany and smashing the Reich's war plants. But a combination of battlefield politics, faulty intelligence, bad luck and even worse weather led to the disaster beyond the Allies' darkest fear.

 Classic War Film

This is a classic war film showing in detail Operation Market Garden. It shows the good and the bad sides to the allies planning and the cast list is amazing and never likely to be repeated. I will be buying this on Blu Ray and cant wait

An all time favourite badly let down

watch out for a collectors edition. this is a rush job and possibly the worst blu ray transfer i've seen. Some parts are good but overall a duffer

When working with a very old film you have to hedge your bets that a poor job is on the cards. Not so.
Some shots are grainy but that is down to the movie and what it was shot on. Having seen this on DVD the blu ray blows it away BUT it did need more polish.
Some of the shots at night are stunning. I have seen the longest Day and that suffers from some grainy shots but like this it's only about 15% of the movie.
Overall I enjoyed it as it was brought to life with strong blacks etc. Shame about the 'over the top' British acting.lol
I do agree that with more time they may have pushed it but if not then I'm pleased with what I saw.

Disappointing Blu-ray but still excellent film.

The film is one of the most accurate depictions of a battle ever put on screen and rigourously adheres to Cornelius Ryan`s superb book.Historians will debate why the operation failed but most of the reasons are on screen although the depiction of solely using Browning as the scapegoat and villain of the piece is an unkind and unjust portrayal.Action scenes are decent enough although the main highlight is the actual para drop which truly makes you gasp with wonder-filmed for real and looks awesome.

I compared the Blu-ray to the 2 disc special edition dvd and Blu-ray is slightly better with the emphasis on slightly.I can`t say though that I was totally bowled over as I was with the Blu-ray visual of "Zulu" which is truly amazing! This film only dates from 1977 and I`m sure if they made the effort they could give us something with real clarity and definition.(and some decent extras which this disc is sorely lacking)Sound is improved but not exactly stunning.Poor effort really for a quality epic.

'it's a 'great' film ( you may wish to stick with the 'dvd')

this is probably one of the best fact-based war films ever placed on the big screen, with a cast list to match.
it tells of a plan to secure three bridges in holland for the use of advancing alied troops that landed in france on d-day.
it tells of the arrogance and mistakes made by both sides during this 'op' including ignoring the dutch intelligence recieved regarding the large prescence of german forces in the 'arnhem' region.
this is such a good film, but perhaps those of us that decided to buy on this format really did have a 'wish' too far ? yes some sequences are enhanced a little, as is the sound quality in places, but is it enough to make a 'blu-ray' purchase when many of us, including myself also own the 'dvd' ................probably not, i now have both formats, i'd previously also owned the 'video' ( trouble is we all or many of us seek that improvement on the visual and sound quality even though it's more in hope than expectation on films made this far back )
