On a dark, deserted street a half naked, visibly abused girl runs screaming. Bruised, bloody and suffering from dementia she is eventually rescued by the local police. Her name is Lucie and she's been missing for over a year but refuses to give away any information describing her captors or any details concerning her violent abduction. During an intensive investigation the police eventually discover an abandoned slaughterhouse containing what looks like a torture chamber. But what exactly took place and how Lucie managed to escape remains a mystery. Many years after the horrific incident a seemingly normal family have an unexpected guest during breakfast. Their surprise visitor is a distraught young woman carrying a loaded shotgun, intent on revenge. Directed by Pascal Laugier (House Of Voices), Martyrs is an incredibly disturbing experience that goes beyond the constraints of an average Horror/Thriller and into the dark psychological depths of human drama and suffering. Extremely terrifying, utterly believable, provocative and ultimately tragic, Martyrs is one of the most unforgettable films you'll ever witness.

We are used to seeing all sorts of images and portrayals of the sinister side of life nowadays arent we ? Watching martyrs leaves you feeling that there must be people out there who behave like the "religious" characters in this film who believe in the darkest ideals. This film will haunt you for days afterwards-especially the final image-i suppose that is the intention.french "horror" seems to be based on the very very dark taboo subjects we know happen but noone talks about.
This film brings it out into the open and sticks it in your face.
Dont expect to feel good after watching this. I felt a bit numb and thinking "could this really happen ?"
The thoght that preys on my mind is that the answer to that question is probably yes !
Thats what makes martyrs disturbing.

 Genre defying.

This started out a horror film, a pretty scary one at that. I'd like to state there is no film I found to be really scary, and seeing "extreme" things never bothers me. This is the one film I have found hard to watch, but there is so much meaning behind it, and an ending that left me speechless, that made it so worth watching. A deep film, and the darkest I have seen, yet its actually beautiful, in some ways a love story between friends. Torture porn this is not, its genre defying, and leaves you thinking for hours, maybe days after. You may just look at the world differently. If you can endure what is shown to you, you will find a very powerful film in "Martyrs".

well have just finished watching this didnt know to much about it before or what it was really about, well i must say that i can sit through pretty much anything in the way of film but martyrs has well left a very strange feeling with me to say its disturbing really does not sum this film up starting of you think oh yeah we got another grudge copy here and then bang complete change of direction and some very very disturbing scenes that will stick with you way after the film has ended.ive given it 5 stars not because of the film itself i mean acting is very good considering the nature of the subject but for the way the film just grabs you and yes disturbs you in ways that most other films wouldnt come close.i would recomend this film but be very warned there are some extremly disturbing scenes in it.as for the blue ray pc, was not up to scratch to be honest it was more like an upscaled dvd, sc was good and added to the films nature.extra wise not a great deal to be honest i picked it up cheap on blue ray but like i said if you see it cheaper on dvd you might as well grab it on that

you will either love it or hate it.

imagine watching the exorsist when it was originally released. imagine watching nightmare on elm street when you were a kid. or IT. or halloween. films that were ground breaking (at the time) and films which disturbed you and made you think about them every time you closed your eyes.
this film litteraly made me feel sick. and i couldnt understand why.
ive seen more gory films. ive seen more jumpy films. ive seen more thought provoking films. ive seen things on the internet that no one shoud see. i thought i was reasonably desensatised.
so why is it the first film ive seen that has genuinly turned my stomache?
(it was a relief to read on IMDB that people were actually being sick in the cinema, so it wasnt just me)
as below reviews say, its a film of 2 halves.
but this film shouldnt be compared to the ring or the grudge or hostel. id compare it more to irreversible.
the creators have made a monster. part of me wishes i never watched it. i dont think id watch it again anytime soon. but im glad i watched it.

bluray review. good picture, not great. if its cheaper on dvd you could easily get away with dvd.

 A film of 2 halves....

Its hard to explain how Martyrs changes in the second half of the film. It's still the same type of film - shock/horror/gore that the french seem to like putting out at the moment - but while the first half is excellent, the second....not so much. The first half, which deals mainly with the past of one of the two female leads, is at the same time interesting, tense, and at times horrible. It's pitched at just the right kind of horrible though, so even when its nasty, you want to keep watching. Then, without giving too much away, at a certain point in the film, a "truth" is revealed, which is where the film should get really interesting. But instead, it becomes a sub Hostel torture porn film with no real payoff for the characters. The ending tries to be deep, but is vague enough to confuse and probably frustrate most. It is worth watching for the first half though, which is closer to something like The Ring than what the second half turns into, and the ending could provoke some discussion depending on who you watch it with. Although that discussion may just be "what the hell was that we just watched?".
