Back in the late '80s, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life - trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a romance with an aging stripper (Marisa Tomei). Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy "The Ram" back in. With a career-defining, multi-award winning performance from Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler is a moving and unforgettable masterpiece from acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky.

 Amazing movie.

It's touching. It's dramatic, it's a romance, it has action. Tragedy, comedy, a great script, awesome realistic and gritty believable performances. This is a classic movie, a parabole about the human spirit, and even though the subject matter might make some people cringe ... it's one of the movie's biggest triumphs - that it takes a subject that could be easily be "frowned upon" and turns it into such an emotional tour da force of a movie...
Great storytelling and at long last - a movie with a serious message... (even if it's the unlikeliest theme)

Must see movie !

ah btw, Mickey - say's it as it is - the 90s rock sucked ! (Did i mention this comes with an awesome 80s soundtrack !!!? (Done it now !)

''mickey rourke's' best role for years.

This film, i think it would or should be a must watch for today's wrestling stars who by public demand have to rise to ever more risky stunts, as those of you who watch wrestle events on a regular basis, the stunts often cause serious injury. Wether it be from 'tables' 'ladders' man was not meant to fly.
Sadly we know of many that have not lived to see old bones, one match too many or just keeping going for a little too long ?
This film...'randy' once a headliner, now wrestles in front of small crowds just to make ends meet, also it's all he knows having long since lost the people that cared about him or even that he should but didn't put first through his life.
After a heart attack 'randy' is told he can't fight again, he now try's to rebuilt a relashionships with his long since estranged daughter, he also wants to start a meaningful relashionship with an ageing 'striper'
He takes a mundane position working on a deli-bar in a local store,
Can he settle for what he could now have or does he miss the adulation he used to get from the ring more than is adviseable ?
This is a pretty good reflection of the wrestling world as it is today, with some decent 'ring-action' sequences, not to mention the reality of the way the sport is stage-managed.
Might be a film for the boys, but there are other aspects to the film which make it a must see.

 Rouke Rocks !

After all the hype a gave this a go and was slightly disappointed. OK so Rouke rocks as the washed up Wrestler and the Wrestling scenes are gritty and realistic. It's the story that left me cold as it's nothing I haven't seen before in a Rocky movie (Boxing/Wrestling they all get smashed, mixed up love interest, one last chance etc). Worth a look for Rouke's performance alone.

 Great for non-wrestling fans

Saw movie under much of the media hype that was coming out about it. Rouke was fantastic - the wrestlers own life mirroring a sadness that Rouke seems to exube. However, entering the cinema a keen wrestling fan I left with none of my views about the sport changed. This is a voyeurs movie about the art from that does little for the average WWE fan, but will provide a great stepping stone for any non-believers. If you want to truly understand the business then catch some WWE before you see this, or even better the documentary Wrestling with Shadows featuring Brett Hart. Decent enough movie with a heart felt human story though so take it beyond the wrestling and we can al relate to this tale. Worth a look.
