Having shelled out for this film four times already (twice on VHS and twice on DVD), I was initially reluctant to fork out a fifth time. However, armed with a new Panasonic 42" plasma and its accompanying BD35 Blu-ray player, temptation finally got the better of me and I ordered it in time for my annual D-Day viewing.
How does it look? In a word, stunning! What Fox have given us is a beautifully restored image - clean, full of inky blacks, lovely greyscale, and a level of detail that I had never seen on previous home entertainment versions, giving the transfer an almost three dimensional quality. There was a lot of concern raised last year upon the US BD's release (by no lesser figure than Robert A. Harris, among others) as to the heavy application of DNR. While this may be apparent when projected onto a large screen, certainly on a 42" panel it's not an issue.
I can't comment on the sound quality as I haven't got my system set up yet, and the extras are all ported over from the last DVD edition.
The bottom line is that if you're a fan of the film, then the Blu-ray is an essential upgrade, purely on the picture quality alone.
Saving Private Ryan aside ,this is the best film about opperation Overlord. This a documentry style film with alot of famouse actors, to many to mention.Huge set piece battles, well before C G I.For fans of the old style war film, this is a must.
An undertaking almost as big and monumental as the Normandy D-Day landings it depicts, "The Longest Day" is probably uberproducer Zanuck's greatest lasting testament. And while some of it hasn't worn too well (some overacting amongst the huge cast, some clearly desperate to make an impression in their limited screen time, and some very ropy back projection) this is still a very concise and very lucid account of one of the most important days in modern history. You get a lot of bang for your buck too.
The Blu-ray transfer is pin-sharp too. Really helps to highlight the film's Oscar-winning black and white cinematography.
You can't go wrong buying this. Fantastic presentation and loads of extras. Looks superb in Blu Ray. Go on treat yourself! Highly recommended.
As said by others, this epic D Day epic transfers well to Blu Ray and has lost none of its appeal as a cross between a documentary and a WW2 actioner with over the top hamming by some of the cast. American actors have some awful gungho lines and John Wayne excels in his. Heck of a lot of middle aged actors playing real men half their age but the whole thing works as piece of History portrayed in the style of the day. I love the fact they kept the blooper of Rommel against a green screen meant to show him on the beaches when like Harry Potter he vanished for a few seconds - just like that!
