Awesome film, absolutely awesome and the best 2 hours of cinema I've seen yet this year (and quite possibly not to be bettered) as the USS Enterprise and her crew assemble for the first time and begin their voyages together.
The film goes back to the very start (courtesy of some time-travel goings-on that get explained by a very familar face) and shows us how James Kirk came into the world (via an absolutely astonishing space battle no less!), while his future friend Spock struggles with his mixed heritage on Vulcan.
Cut to a few years (and events) later and both are in the Academy when an emergency brings them together, with the rest of the famous crew in a stupendous adventure written wonderfully and directed with confidence by J.J Abrams.
Much like Iron Man, and X-Men before it, this is the origin story to pave the way for hopefully deeper stories later. As the focus is on the journey to become 'the crew' the villian Nero's effectiveness will differ for some. It also alters some things from the old series and that too will affect some people's possible entertainment.
But this is such FUN!! It's energetic, fast paced and never gives you pause. It's a blast of an experience and probably one you will want to journey on more than once!
The cast is exceptional, the effects peerless and dynamic, and I can't wait for the sequel already!!
This is finally going to be the film and edition that converts me to blu-ray, because nothing will show it up better than this superbly packaged and extras laden release.
November will not come soon enough!!!
