The complete set of all five series of the TV smash hit Battlestar Galactica.

Following a devastating attack on their homeworlds, the only surviving humans of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol cross the galaxy in a space convoy headed by the Battleship Galactica. In hot pursuit are the ruthless Cylons, powerful robots who turned on their human creators and brought about the near annihilation of mankind. The voyagers' last hope is to find the fabled 13th colony: Earth. But with their nemeses in hot pursuit and the revelation that the artificial machines now have the ability to take human form, it's going to be very far from an easy quest.

 The best TV show ever?

| | See all aarmstrong's reviews (3)

There is a reason that many articles have been written debating whether Battlestar Galactica is the greatest TV show ever made and there are many reasons that most come to the conclusion that it is!
I started watching the show rather reluctantly, believing it to be a geeky series with nothing to offer the average television fan. I was wrong.
This show has everything, ultimately being one of the most rounded, beautiful and perfect pieces of television I have seen. It deals with modern issues and raises new questions about humanity itself in a manner which never seems like preaching but actually makes the viewer think about them in real world way. Issues like torture, terrorism, suicide bombers, what it is to be human, abortion and religion are all explored and given new outlooks on. The enemies religion is closer to Christianity than the protagonists and cases for terrorist acts are brought to the fore front, constantly challenging the audiences real world views.
Be warned, Battlestar Galactica is unrelentingly dark and hopeless but that is the beauty of it. The characters are facing the extinction of the human race and indeed have lost a war that sees the number of humans in existence to fewer than 50,000, all searching for a planet that may not exist whilst being chased by an unrelenting force.
Look past this darkness though and you will find a programme that is rich in action, politics, intrigue, and excitement and takes viewers on an epic journey which twists and turns right the way until it's perfect finale.
It is rare that I find myself viewing a programme where I can not find a season which falls flat or a finale which doesn't quite satisfy but Battlestar Galactica succeeds on both fronts.
Try, like I did, Battlestar Galactica and you will see why so many call it the best TV show ever and why so many consider it a highly important piece. After all, a show that is asked to speak at the United Nations can't be all that bad can it?

 Could've been a contender

I would imagine anyone paying this much for a TV boxset would have already seen the series. But if for some reason you want to buy a boxset unseen and are actually reading reviews to help you decide then here are my thoughts:

BSG was at its best when it was doing action stories. When it started trying to moralise all the time and got away from its overarcing story it floundered.

The characters were nice and solid at first, but as time wore on their personality changed on a whim from week to week depending on what story the writers wanted to tell. This wasn't an organic progression or development of personalities over time, but a rather jolting transation from week to week.

This could have truly been the greatest drama ever, but instead inconsistent characters and variable pacing brings it down to 3 out of 5 stars.

Certainly better than a lot of TV out there, but it could have been so much better.

 Fantasic series, bad packaging

Firstly ill speak about the actual blu-ray boxset:

This has been put onto blu-ray extremely well, excellent picture and sound and the best thing about this is the extended episode of unfinished business in season 3.. And the few extended episodes in season 4.5 (or final season)

I couldnt be more happy about it.

One downside is the packaging is poor.. The tin is quite low quality apart from the indented cylon. And the actual blu-ray cases inside are as cheap as they come. Very brittle plastic in a tight fitted low quality thin cardboard sleeve which you can easily crease or tear. Its a shame as youd expect the best for this pricetag but luckily the contents of this boxset make it all worth it!

Onto the series,

This is the finest bit of television your ever going to see. The acting, grittyness, dark plot, direction and the production are all of the finest quality. I especially love the camera work used and the cgi especially from season 2 onwards is amazing quality. Its just all so emotionally gripping id reccomend this to even non-scifi fans. I even got my girlfriend into bsg and shes not a fan of anything science fiction!

One of the very best - ever

BSG is without a doubt one of the best tv shows of the last 10 years or more.

It is more politically brave and aware than The West Wing ever was and also written with more levels of detail (and i loved The West Wing). It is also more "real" than Star Trek could ever hope to be. The closest that show got was DS9, which of course Ron Moore was heavily involved with also.

No other show has dared go near the subject matter that BSG has covered in its run.

The actors are also top notch. Many were completely unkown to me before the show aired, but now you cannot imagine anyone else in the roles.

This is the very idea of unmissable television.

P.S. BSG now needs to be left well alone, the fact that they are considering a Bryan Singer BSG movie that is unrelated to this show is just plain silly and will never be anything more than a pale shadow of the wonderful, twisted creature the tv show is.

A sci-fi that makes us all ask questions

I started to watch BSG after a friend at work told me how much he enjoyed watching it. I bought the mini series to get me started and I must say at first I wasn't convinced that this would be for me.

I then got the first series off of another work college, without giving too much away this really grabbed you when the story line kicked you into the most immersive story writing you could imagine. You ever get the 'just one more' feeling when you watch something you really like? Well I was grabbing episode after episode sometimes using all of the day just watching this brilliant sci-fi show.

This show really had everything, the dark and grim, religion which did play a huge role in this, politics, terroism and light heartedness. You got to know the characters so well that this would litterally have you gripping on for the next plot twist or explanation.

I've been a sci-fi lover for years with Star Trek, Farscape, Firefly and Stargate. This story is one of the best ever told with the power of television. It makes you question what the human race would do in their situation and question all the topics this series covers.

Even after this series finnished I still wanted more. All in all the best sci-fi programme I have ever watched.
