Shutter Island is an insanely good mystery from legendary director Martin Scorsese, based on the novel by Dennis Lehane ("Mystic River"). Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a US Marshal investigating the case of an escaped mental patient in a thriller that will keep you guessing to the end!

When U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) arrives at the asylum for the criminally insane on Shutter Island, what starts as a routine investigation quickly takes a sinister turn. As the investigation unfolds and Teddy uncovers more shocking and terrifying truths about the island, he learns there are some places that never let you go.

 A message to the Haters

Quick review: extremely well made film (as you'd expect from Scorsese), excellent acting & a claustrophobic score. A great watch. Blu-Ray transfer is excellent too.

However, it seems many people on play.com want to hate on this film because they guessed the twist, or that the twist has been done before.

They seem to miss that it's not the twist itself that matters, but HOW you get there. Shutter Island is a great example of a film where the journey is more entertaining than the twist, and if you think you're incredibly clever for guessing the twist 10mins in, then all you're doing is depriving yourself of the chance to enjoy the narrative.

I enjoyed this film because I didn't sit there obsessively trying to guess what was going to happen next. I let the film tell me a story, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

 Brilliant film Dad

I'm 48 years of age, I watched it with my 15 year old son. After it was over he turned to me & said "That was a brilliant film, Dad", I have to agree.

Well Dicaprio is definetly back to from with this film! This was one of the most enthralling films that I watched back in 2009 I loved every milisecond from the very start to the very end. With all the twists and turns, mystery after mystery it just seems to draw you in as the viewer. yet another film that will leave you wanting so much more and leave you thinking for days after and talking to your friends and family about. A definate classic in the making, well worth a purchase if you haven't somehow seen it yet and a great buy if you have, bargin!

Highly Enjoyable Edge of the Seat film, with a good Story, Refreshing Direction by the Great Martin Scorsese, and An Excellent central performance from Leonardo Di Caprio. Scorsese and Di Caprio are well supported by Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo, as well as some Mind Bending Cinematography and Effects, and a very Unsettling Soundtrack.

 Enormous fun, and gripping

From the opening arrival of our heroes on the island, you know it's going to be a film laden with threat and drama. The foghorn-like score thunders threateningly in the background as guards shift nervously, and heft their rifles with a mix of territorial aggression and fear as Leo Dicaprio and his partner Mark Ruffalo step onto the dock and approach them. The rest of the film manages the same fantastic atmosphere of danger and confusion, perfectly fitting this dark thriller. A dangerous patient has vanished into thin air on the island, and the doctors want help. But soon it becomes clear that everyone has a hidden agenda, and with even the hero's own war hero background working against him and plaguing him with doubts, the situation begins to spiral lethally out of control. Author Dennis Lehane has publicly stated that he wrote the novel Shutter Island to be as 'bonkers' as possible because he was alarmed at the ease and comfort with which some people were reacting to his work. Shutter Island manages as a result to have a fantastic atmosphere and a terrific twist, and may ironically end up being one of the most popular of his works. You'll need to pay attention while watching it, but it will be rewarded. DiCaprio gives a magnetic performance, and Ruffalo shines in what is normally just a supporting role. I went into the cinema unsure what to expect, and I came out impressed by one of the best films of the year.
