5 A film that deserves a better repuatationFilmlover | 12/10/2009 | See all Filmlover's reviews (93)Top 100 Reviewer Top 100 DVD Reviewer I loved this film from the first time that I saw it. I have always been dismayed at others lack of vision in connection with the ending of this story, the main reason for others criticisms. Please remember (this is explained in the relevant scene BTW) what is seen by Jodie Foster's character in the space scenes is not a literal vision of what actually happened to her character, rather a simple human interpretation of a message from a race far more intelligent than any human. This message would otherwise have been lost even on the Earth's most educated and intelligent representative(s) as it was at a level that none of us could ever attempt to comprehend.I love this film, I would say that it's best described as the thinking man's Science fiction. Right up to the end of the story you do not know who to trust and what to believe. Right up to the end when some revealing information about a video recording turns the whole plot on its head again. This film has some truly amazing cinematography too and at the time it was made this film claimed the title of the film with the most special effects (although you would not know this on the whole as they are so subtle. Do watch the documentary on the disc to discover more on this subject) I would highly recommend this film if you want your ideas on what would happen to the human race if we did receive a signal for another intelligent life form out there in the darkness of space.
