The exciting adventure of the day we make contact with life beyond Earth comes to the screen with a profound sense of wonder and a dazzling visual sweep that extends to the outer reaches of space and the imagination. Jodie Foster is astronomer Ellie Arroway, a woman of science. Matthew McConaughey is religious scholar Palmer Joss, a man of faith. They're opposite ends of a spectrum - and sudden players on the world stage as the countdown to humanity's greatest journey begins. Powerfully, thrillingly and emotionally, Contact connects.

A film that deserves a better repuatation

I loved this film from the first time that I saw it. I have always been dismayed at others lack of vision in connection with the ending of this story, the main reason for others criticisms. Please remember (this is explained in the relevant scene BTW) what is seen by Jodie Foster's character in the space scenes is not a literal vision of what actually happened to her character, rather a simple human interpretation of a message from a race far more intelligent than any human. This message would otherwise have been lost even on the Earth's most educated and intelligent representative(s) as it was at a level that none of us could ever attempt to comprehend.

I love this film, I would say that it's best described as the thinking man's Science fiction. Right up to the end of the story you do not know who to trust and what to believe. Right up to the end when some revealing information about a video recording turns the whole plot on its head again.

This film has some truly amazing cinematography too and at the time it was made this film claimed the title of the film with the most special effects (although you would not know this on the whole as they are so subtle. Do watch the documentary on the disc to discover more on this subject) I would highly recommend this film if you want your ideas on what would happen to the human race if we did receive a signal for another intelligent life form out there in the darkness of space.

 A great SCIFI ride !!

Great bit of SCIFI ! Loved this film when I first saw it ,hope with the blu ray release its a good transfer,as the special effects with travel machine scenes will be fantastic. The slow start soon turns into a very exciting build up towards Contact being made, its only the end I feel is a slight let down, but I guess you can make you own conclusions as to what it all means...

 Languages and Verdict

Blu Ray all zone

Ratio of the feature film:
2.35:1

Languages of the feature film:
Dolby True HD 5.1: English
Dolby 5.1: French, German, Italian, Castilian Spanish and Isolated score-track
Dolby 2.0: Brazilian Portuguese and 3 commentaries (including Jodie Foster, Robert Zemeckis)

Subtitles for all the videos:
- French, Italian, Castilian Spanish, Dutch, Latin Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish.
- German, Italian and English for the hard of hearings.

Verdict:
A very good picture with an excellent soundtrack. The film looks extremely good on this blu-ray.
This film makes us wonder a very good question: Science or Religion. We all rely on our perceptions and instincts to make a judgement about where we live and what we are experiencing and yet, we are a long way to always have the evidence to prove what we live and feel.
But which one to go for?
It is up to you after watching this film. Enjoy!

NB: Despite Jodie Foster speaking French very well. It is not Mrs. Foster who we hear in the French version of the film but instead it is Julie Dumas.
It is one of the two films where Mrs. Foster does not dub herself.

DOLBY TrueHD is the better sound format!

Saw this at the cinema in DOLBY DIGITAL SR-D and it was WOW from sound, stand point of view of dazzling visuals accompanied by a neat Randy Thorn DOLBY film mix.

The split-stereo surrounds happened moments before the visuals are up on screen from past events then continuing on as the sound leaves the surrounds to fronts and slowly the sounds are mixed down to centre channel only with nothing else playing on surrounds or left/right front incredible DOLBY film mix that can only be heard listened to its its trueness of DOLBY TrueHD 6channel.

 Excellent and thought-provoking science fiction

From the opening sequence to the last scene this film will keep you hooked in wonder at what first contact with an alien intelligence will be like. The film's premise is that Jodie Foster's scientist discovers a signal from a far away galaxy that can only be interpreted as being sent by an intelligent lifeforce, and from that point the film takes you on a journey that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The film's first scene is a beautiful pan-out shot from the earth all the way beyond our galaxy, done in a very subtle way, and this alone is enough to get you interested. John Hurt is great as the rich industrialist trying to pull some strings in the background, and Jodie Foster's acting is first class. My only gripe is that Matthew McConnaghy's character is a little irritating after a while with a slightly pious attitude, but this can be overlooked by the scope of the film's vision and its approach to what can be seen as a geeky subject. Based on the book by Carl Sagan. This film has been undeservedly overlooked by many. I recommend it highly.
