A lone time traveller from the year 2035 must solve a riddle that may save his people... but it may also take him to the brink of madness. Bruce Willis, Madeline Stowe and Brad Pitt star in this brilliant sci-fi masterpiece from Terry Gilliam. After the world's population is devastated by a killer virus, survivors must live in dark underground communities. Cole (Willis) "volunteers" to travel into the past to obtain a pure virus sample, thereby helping scientists develop a cure. Along the way, he crosses paths with a beautiful psychiatrist (Stowe) and a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck mental patient (Pitt). But the race is on, as Cole searches for The Army of the 12 Monkeys, a radical group linked to the deadly disease.

With unforgettable performances and imaginative special effects, 12 Monkeys is a modern-day classic laced with Gilliam's trademark wit and dazzling visual style.

Excellent movie, shame about the transfer

This is an excellent film but unfortunately the transfer of this movie to Blu ray does not really warrant a High Definition tag. Although the movie sound has been upgraded, the picture quality is rather poor.

This Blu ray disc is worth it, only IF you can get it for a BUDGET price, as it is easily the worst picture transfer I have seen on Blu ray so far for a major movie.

 Great film & great extras

Wonderful time travelling sc fi movie about eco warriors attempting to end life as we know it on Earth in the near future. Can the future be changed?

The hamster factory (extras) is one of the best documenty films I have seen that shows every step of production and distribution on a major film release via the Hollywood system, a really insightful account from the perspective of the film director and the producers. As entertaining as the film its self...

 Quality experts !!!!!

I nearly never bought this disc because of the reviews below about picture quality, to many people seam to think they are experts on the quality of the picture Transfer on to blu-ray, however do these people not stop to think that not all moves are made with cristal clear pictures some movies are made to look dark , grainy and with other inperfectsoins to give the moves some Atmosphere. So if you like this movie buy it it looks stunning the way it should do. Oh and the movie is stunning too

Terry Gilliam's 1995 sci-fi thriller remains for me one of my favourite films of the 90's and I was initially hesitant about trying the Blu Ray out. But I picked it up cheap and I have to say I thought picture quality was just fine.

As Bruce Willis time traveller moves back and forth in time trying to find clues to the viral event that destroyed most of the human race, becoming involved with Madeleine Stowe's psychiatrist along the way Gilliam blends time travel, memory, dreams, perception and reality and throws it all about in hugely rewarding fashion. One of those films that demands multiple viewings to really get inside and appreciate. The Blu Ray picture quality was just fine to my eyes. A little soft in places but it seems to me this is probably due to how Gilliam shot the film and what look he wanted. But it is better than the standard Blu Ray. However, it certainly will not be the best transfer you will ever see.

Extras involve the highly entertaining 'The Hamster Factor' making of documentary, a commentary and trailers and archives from production as well.

 Twelve Monkeys Blu-ray

Twelve Monkeys is a quirky Terry Gilliam-directed science fiction thriller that takes the ramblings of a madman and questions whether they may actually be prophetic. Bruce Willis plays a criminal who is sent from the future to find an antedote to the virus that wipes out most of mankind at the end of the twentieth century. It features fantastic central performances from Willis, Madeleine Stowe as the psychologist he hooks up with, and Brad Pitt as an incarcerated looney who poses a real threat once released back into the care of his affluent father. An unusual film even today, it holds up well and proves to have a strong emotional and philosophical core.

The Blu-ray presents the film in full HD with a DTS surround track - cinematography is deliberately soft-focused and hazy in places and this is obviously reflected on the disc. It's still a step up in terms of detail, colour and contrast from DVD, just not quite the jump people may expect after watching some of today's glossy big budgeters - basically the transfer is an accurate representation of what the film should look like. Most welcome is an audio commentary from Gilliam and producer Charles Roven, plus the indispensable feature length documentary The Hamster Factor - pretty much worth the price of admission by itself as it focuses on the film-making process along with some of the troubles the director has been through. There is also a large image archive and theatrical trailer. Overall an interesting film on a very decent Blu-ray.
