"Out of Reach" has got to have the dodgiest premise ever for an action film: a retired secret agent (here we go again!) has formed a pen-pal relationship with a 13 year old girl and when the latter is kidnapped by human traffickers, he comes out of retirement to save the girl and slay the bad guys.

It's a measure of how dire this film is that it's only fairly late on someone realises that the hero's relationship with the girl is, how shall we put it, of questionable propriety and we therefore have the suggestion that the hero is trying to redeem himself for some unspecified mistake in his past. But by this time the damage has been done, as we've long been wallowing in the usual Seagal slough of bad acting, bad direction and improbable action. With regard to the first of these, Matt Schulze deserves special mention for a performance that looks like a bearded caricature of Hannibal Lecter.

Seagal sometimes almost beats his audience into submission by his resolute refusal to admit the obvious: he's rubbish. But in this catastrophe, even this perseverance fails to win him any credit. Better spend your £4.99 on something, anything, else.
