Jean-Claude Van Damme is Lyon, a French Legionnaire who has no choice but to go a.w.o.l after hearing that his brother is mortally wounded. Arriving penniless in New York, Lyon is forced to enter the underworld of bare-knuckle fighting under the control of "The Lady". However, after Lyon goes against her will, she matches him against the champion-will Lyon find the inner strength to take the championship, or will he die like his brother?

I am a huge Van Damme fan and was pleased to see this movie re-released.Sunil R Shah and Imperial Entertainment should be praised.
The above paragraph is what I would have liked to have written but am unable to due to the unexpected horrific transfer,it is no better than a VHS,it isn't even widescreen and to top it all off, there is no information on the box to let you know this.So what is the point?, you might ask, well I am asking. WHAT IS THE POINT?? Avoid and wait for someone to bring out a release worthy of buying. Fullscreen, who are they kidding!?!? The fans deserve more than a grainy Van Damme!!
Setting your tv to 16:9 and watching it only stretches the image,so that's no good. It is the 21st century,VHS quality ain't gonna cut it.

This is one of those rare classics - Such an entertaining drama as well as a thrilling bare knuckle fight movie. I would put it up there with Rocky as a classic example of a fight movie with heart.

A.W.O.L is a great film with lots of cool fights and having Van Damme as the lead role is good.

I dont like Van Damme but this is his best acting performance so far. He plays Leon, a soldier who finds out that his brother is dying and he has to become a deserter to see him, but when he arrives in America he has no money, no family, has the foriegn legion chasing him and the only way he can stay alive without the legion noing is by street fighting for money. The acting scenes are good and the fights are fantastic, especialy the gruiling end fight with one huge man that makes Van Damme look like a stick insect. But the storyline is the great thing about this film because Leon tries his best looking for his sister in law and when he does she doesnt want to know him and the amount of streetfights in this film is cool.

Overall I think this is Van Dammes best acting film and he mixes that with his great fighting skills which makes this film unmissable.

It's a Van Damme film, that really should let you know everything you need to know!

It's not a bad film, just not that thrilling, for £5.99 if you are an action fan, you could do worse.
