After the battle with General Zod and his gang of Kryptonian super-villains, Superman (Brandan Routh) mysteriously disappears for six years. After searching for more possible survivors from Krypton and finding none, Superman returns to Metropolis to re-assume the identity of Clark Kent. Once he returns, he discovers that Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) is in a relationship and also has a son. Superman also discovers that Metropolis has learned to live without him, causing him to lose his motivation to fight and protect. To make matters worse, Superman's old nemesis Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) has devised a plan to defeat the Man of Steel, for good. Superman must put his troubles behind him in order to protect his lost love, and the city who lost faith in him.

A Great Comic To Screen Translation

Don't listen to anyone who says nothing happens in this film. It's chock-a-block full of iconic moments and pure spectacle cinema.

The basic plot has Superman return (duh!) to Earth after an absence of 5 years, dealing with seeing the love of his life (Lois Lane for those not in the know) married with a kid and the world's reaction to his comeback. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor is hatching yet another diabolical scheme which must be thwarted.

I will be the first to admit that this film could do with at least a couple of more 'Super' moments. It blows it's best high-octane action sequence, with Superman saving a plane hurtling to the ground, within the first third of the film. The climax, which I won't reval, just doesn't top it. From a pure fanboy viewpoint, it would have been great to have a good old super powered slugfest utilising all of Superman's skills against an equally powered opponent, but, it doesn't suffer from having a different focus than most comic inspired movies.

It's a gorgeous looking film, seeing as it was filmed on digital cameras. The best way to watch it is on the biggest screen possible. The performances are mostly good, barring Kate Bosworth's portrayal of Lois Lane. I don't know, she just doesn't feel...right. Brandon Routh is a revelation as the title character, easily stepping out of the shadow of Christopher Reeve to make the part his own. Top marks also to Bryan Singer's faultless direction and Mark Ottman's score, keeping plenty of familiar themes from John Williams original score, especially that superb title music.

The 2 disc DVD is the one to get, with a really long, exhaustively detailed look at the making of the film.

I saw this in the cinema, and was quite disapointed ! but on DVD re-watching the movie I realized what a class act it is. The scope of the movie is Massive . the effects are eye scorching. The film has a real sence of loss. As Superman arrives back on earth after 5 years ,to find this is a very different world( post 9/11 ) and his old sweet heart louis Lane has gotten settled down and a child. But Lex luthor is back to his old tricks. This film is a real treat and Roth as Superman does look like the late great Reeves, and slips into the role like a glove. This film is not action all the way, it gives time to re-address the characters ,but I think this makes for a better and more grown up feel to the movie. But when the action arrives it truly is jaw dropping and you can see every penny of the massive budget on the screen, Stand out moments being the crashing plane and the sinking ship. A brilliant comic book mover that is even better directors Bryan Singers earlier X-MEN and X-MEN 2, and dare I say ,slightly better than the original 1978 SUPERMAN, and can stand up with BATMAN BEGINS, BLADE 2, and the SPIDERMAN TRILOGY as the best comic book to film adaption's ever !

 An excellent comeback

I was amazed by the sheer scale of this rework. The producers took a huge gamble in casting Brandon Routh as the revered Man of Steel, but, fortunately for them, it paid off in spectacular, incredible, passionate style. The premise for the film is simple enough, what makes it interesting is Bryan Singer's personal, emotive touch - exactly the input that made X-Men and X-Men 2 the spectacles they are. An excellent comeback, not a moment too soon.
