This was never going to be in the same league as the first two, and despite a hack director and too many new characters it's still good fun and watchable. I always felt as if the first two films treated the subject matter with undeserved respect, but this third installment is perfectly happy to just get on with the action. No real stand-out scenes as such, but the effects are fine.
this is the poorest film of the x-men trilogy. it suffered a lot from production problems as well as increased pressure from the distributors to rush for a completion date and a box office weekend. it was these pressures that saw bryan singer (directed x-men I & II) walk away from this money-spinning machine and move to other things. because of the lack of a willing director production of this film was always going to be difficult especially for someone new (in the end ratner) to stamp their own personal authority over it. instead they opted for a text-book action film as per the a-z manual. what they lacked in plot they tried to accommodate by shoehorning as many x-men into the film as possible giving no character build up, just a snapshot of what made them special. this is where the previous two films excelled as we had character references, backgrounds and most of all a story about them to follow. this time round more special effects, bigger explosions, more mutants which is all very cool but at the same time it leaves you wanting more and in a state on bewilderment as to why just didn't they...
saying that the film is still more than good. i firmly believe in completing the trilogy series (hey i own alien 4 & AvP) and think this third instalment is still a good addition to any collection. it's got wolverine (never a bad thing), even more colossus (he's just cool) and my favourite the very wily mystique!!! this film is always destined for comparison to its predecessors, however, as a film on its own you'd probably go yeah it was ok... definitely worth a purchase for a fiver to complete the set!!!
This film seems to of got some low ratings which i personally think are a bit harsh as its not all that bad. To be honest i think all the X- Men films are equally as good as one another, but i dont think any of them are completely fantastic films they just seem to be above average films as there are parts in all the films which are fantastic(mainly Wolverines) and other parts are a bit lame. The last Stand is no exception to this but is definitely worth at least one watch for Wolverine if nothing else!So if your not a die hard comic fan who is likely to criticise the movie and instead your just after some light escapism and action this is by no means a bad choice.
This film was generally well received at the time of its release and was given all-round 'good' scores.
However, I feel that it is the best film in the trilogy. It has the same style as the original and its sequel, with the only real change in staff being the director.
Having Ratner at the helm has made the action scenes more enjoyable and better constructed. His knowlege of the logistics of action does seem to exceed Singer's, despite what loyalists may claim.
THere are some great moments in the movie, those that will profoundly effect fans of the comics and films, including some shocking deaths and a final, moving, pay-off thats been brewing since about 20minutes into X-Men.
All the reviews are mixed on here, but that means only 1 thing, its a multi-layed movie that deserves your own opinion, and for a Lady Gudiver, you can't turn your nose up really.
Because of it's director, this movie has been compared a lot with Superman Returns. Well, not only is it an excellent addition to the X-Men series it's also a hell of a lot better than Superman Returns. Forget about the negative reviews, check it out, I'm sure you'll enjoy it, especially if you enjoyed the previous films.
